I have 31x10.50's on stock gearing and can still get up to 85 but when driving through the sierra nevada mountains on the freeway going camping or something i have it in 4th and can only go about 65 at best. I don't know if they made much difference, but i have flowmasters and a K&N filter.

While I am not going to dispute this for your truck, as you may have gotten a ton of performance gain, it was not the case for me.

I am running a K&N element, and a 2.5 inch exhaust with a "tri Y" header, and it sucks hard. I wish i'd never spent money on it. What a waste of time and energy. I saw zero gain in anything, and all i got was a bigger tail pipe to smash on stuff.

2.5" is generally considered too big for the 22RE. I haven't done the dyno testing, but most people say that going that large will result in a loss in torque.

I took a 22R (California spec), went to a weber, mild head porting, engnbldr valves, RV cam, header, exhaust (2.25"), weber, and an MSD. Significant difference in power.

Bang for the buck - do the header, the weber, then the exhaust.

The NA trucks will never be powerful, unless you do massive port work and tune them for 6000 RPM (circle track). EFI has it's limitations.

Big gains - the only real option is forced induction.

2.5 inch exhaust is probably too big for a little 22re. at some point you start losing torque when you don't have enough back pressure. when i hollowed out my old catalytic converter, what i experienced seemed to be more top end horsepower and less low end torque....and that's really good for nothing in these trucks. especially a 4x4. even on the street man...you're still pushing some pretty big tires. you want torque, not horsepower


i'd say 2-2.25" should be good for the exhaust



other than that, there are little things that could be robbing your engine of power. things like timing, fuel delivery, etc. is it all tuned up well?
generally these are pretty gutless engines, but i can definitely go faster than 70 with mine, and i've got 30 inch tires on it, and stock gears of course. bigger tires or improper gearing can rob you of your power as well.

i mean the difference between 4.10 w/ 31s and 4.10 w/30s is really incredible. i found myself passing people uphill after i made the switch, i couldn't believe it. its still slow though...don't get me wrong

I had a similar loss of power combined w/ a drop in feul economy last fall so i replaced the injectors and all of the power and mileage came back

So most likey I have a problem cuz i cant hold 70 on the highway and its very doggy.

Looked at your plugs recently?

My old motor burned oil and I noticed it getting slower and slower and it suddenly dawned on me to check the plugs. A couple of them had practically fouled shut.

Headers and exhaust (2.25) and intake are the cheapest bolt on to get the most bang for the buck.
However it sounds more like the compression is low and that is why you are losing power. If you do any mods to the performance you will have the chance of shorting the life of your engine if you have low compression. Do the compression check first to see what that is. even one piston with lower compression will have great effects on the engine. if they are in a good range of each other than try a tune up. Plugs wires cap rotor air filter fuel filter clean your intake manifold, check your CAT to see if it is clogged. those are all things that can effect performance. After that then go with the upgrades, header exhaust new intake cam. Good luck.

my 22re in my 86 was pretty quick took a minute to get up 2 speed but it was 4x4....i could cruise 85-90 and i had it topped at 100 stock....

I have 33x12.5's on my rig. On the highway I can hold it at 65 or 70, but the engine is running at a little over 3k, so it's not ideal. I'm not sure on the gearing since I bought it with the lift and wheels.

I have an 88' 22RE 5SP 4runner. The fastest I've ever hit was 95mph,but at that point I thought I was going to blow up. It would consistantly do 80 to 85.I have a "custom" exhaust(pipe rusted behind cat and fell off) and a drop in K&N filter. I also have 31x10.50 on 15x8's. If you put your foot in them the'll do good. They aren't V8's but the are a good all around .Good MPG and Decent Power.

alright, the deal with the clutch thing, its not that its taking away power, its that the power isnt hitting.for a while in my 94' 2wd 22re i could slam the gas and it would just sound like i had te clutch in and would barely increase. and then one day on my way home, BAM, gas and nothing. i rolled onto a side street and sat there. the flywheel was completely skinned. if u replaced the clutch then i dunno, but it depends on what parts of the clutch u replaced and such. make sure everything on that gets checked. a k&n air filter does make a big difference in power. more pop faster. i can hold about 105, but it takes a while to get there. i can grab 90 in under a minute though. not sure what it is exactly, but i dig it. iv also got a thrush exhaust. yep

Ive gotten my 1994 4x4 pick up with the 22re , up to about to 95.

It has the worst accleration though.

btw, i beat a beamer 2day. it is possible with a 4cyl 22re 2wd pu. this has been proven. all iv done is the k&n and thrush exhaust. im not gonna lie though, it was about a 90 station wagon lookin bmw, but dude, count it. -_^
