Question 22RE Pistons: Recommendations and Do you get what you pay for???

Well I gota call from my machine shop, and I need some new pistons 20 over. Who would you recomend for some good pistons? I think I'm gonna stay with cast pistons... Now I've had a lotta luck useing engbldr's suff and he has some for 91 bucks /w rings, but LC's got a set for 229? I don't see a consistent pirce point for pistons, so I'm a little confused... I do mostly stree driving and I wnat to build a solid block. Thanks for your advice!

My setup: 93 pickup 5spd 22RE engbldr's cam, O/S valves, springs, and TC kit K&N drop-in LC's header and 2.5" magnaflow exhaust.

id get a complete rebuild kit from ted... youll have everything everything you need that way. its only like 219 for the kit. you could also go hypereutectic from keith black but they are a more brittle piston from the rumors ive heard.

Buy Ted's stuff, without a doubt.
IF you're uncomfortable with the reduced price, just throw him another $100.

Seriously, Ted has built a TON of these motors. If you're concerned with the quality of anything he offers, just ask him about it. He doesn't sell junk and I don't suspect he ever will.

I'd be a little leery of the "authentic JDM" parts that I see on ebay, but I never hesistate to buy Ted's stuff. I'm running his timing set & bearings in a motor that I'll have over 3k in.. IF I thought quality was an issue, I wouldn't be using his stuff.

i'd laugh if i saw "authentic JDM" 22R pistons. for one thing, these engines were never sold in japan(instead, they used the 2.0l 21RU to comply with japanese regulations that tax engines over 2.0l in displacement heavily). also, there were no hi-po trim 22R or 22RE engines from the factory so all the slugs are the same for each generation(early vs late) except for the turbo motors.

i've had ted's pistons in my hybrid engine for almost 2 years now, they have held up to much abuse with flying colors

Cool, thanks for the input guys! I'll shoot Ted an e-mail soon... Geez, now my whole engine is gonna be an EB special. But yah Ted is a cool guy to work with and man is he fast with his e-mails!!!

not to mention that you have to run a wider clearance with forged slugs and they tend to rattle a bit on cold starts.

I'm going to vouch for engnbldr (Ted) also. Prices are great, prompt communication, and he seems like a nice fellow to deal with. I've bought 2 timing chain kits from him in the past 2 years.
