Checking a Clutch?

Checking a Clutch?
I have a 91 Toyota pickup. I bought it used so I don't know how long it has been since the last clutch was put in. This the first 5spd manual trans. I have owned. Just the feel of of seems like it has to be pushed in further than when I bought it. So, what could I do to check this thing out. I don't know what one feels like when it goes out, etc. What should I look for. Would it be cheaper to get a new one before the old one goes out? Thanks for the help.

sounds more like hydrualics than the actual clutch. Check the slave cylinder while someone pushes the clutch to see if it's working, and check for leaks. You may have to bleed it. Or the pedal could just need an adjustment.

To check the clutch, best to do this in a open parking lot. Don't ask how I know.
Put the truck into 5th gear and step hard on the brake. Slowly let out on the clutch, you should stall the engine. Otherwise, you would look for a reving engine and no going forward when you drive. Clutches smell like REALLY HOT brakes when they are slipping.
May want to concider replacing the shifter seat if you are having issues going into 1st or reverse.
