22re Header

I'm going to start this fight again.

I am looking at getting a header for my 22RE. I would like to know everyone's experience and suggestions with headers. Pacesetter/Hedman/Thorley, etc.

On your marks.... Get Set.....

I have a header on my 22re. Love it, it compliments my 2.5" exhaust very well. The truck is super pepy, it surprises all my passengers. Had it made at a local custom exhaust shop.

My next mod is going to be megasquirt and get rid of the restrictive air box. Then the header will really shine.

Overall, my opinion is STOCK.

But which header type depends on usage. Tri-y are good overall headers (Toyota uses that design on the stock manifold) and on some engines perform better than 4-1 across the board. If it's going to be an all-out, high-rpm engine then 4-1 is probably the best bet.

In order of my opinion of headers:
Thorley
Hedman
paper towel tubes duct taped together
PaceSetter

I'm happy with the Thorley but prices went up since I bought maybe they've come down don't know. Tried pacesetter had fitment issues with two headers. Their customer service was good sent me the second header for free but stopped taking my calls when the second one didn't fit any better. For the limited time I did run the pacesetter it through engine codes. I sold the both the pacesetter to finance the thorley, Thorley has crappy customer service so if you go that route go through Summit their service is awesome.

I was looking toward pacesetter, but I'm not so sure now. I may just decide to stay with the stocker.

I've seen guys run longer tubes from the manifold, as Abe said the manifold is a tri-y design. you would be extending the tubes between 2nd and 3rd y. Pacesetter seem to have a new design from pics bleeder posted but I'm biased against them.

I ran a pacesetter many years ago and it was junk. It didn't fit right, so I to auger out the bolt holes so I could get it on. The paint burns and lets off a lot of smoke on initial warm up. On the way to the muffler shop to get my new exhaust put on the gasket that came with the header blew out and I had a hell of an exhaust leak. (it was a 5 mile trip)

When I put my new engine in I opted for a thorley header and it was night and day as far as quality goes. It has a nice chrome finish that blues nicely as it heats up. The gasket that came with it hasn't gone out yet (10k or more miles later) And it actually fit right, no modifications necessary.

If you don't care about it rusting out and looking like crap get a pacesetter as I'm sure the flow isn't really that much different between headers, but if you want something that is no hassle and looks nice then go with a thorley or other high quality header.

I have Downey's ceramic header and 2.5" exhaust w/Magnaflow cat and muffler. Works great. I've always have had good customer service with those guys, FWIW.

Their pro header works well on the 22re. Little extra power and killer sound when paired with the right exhaust.

LC Engineering is hands down the highest quality header available.

That said, they are also the most expensive. If you want high quality parts that will last the life of the truck, pay up for them. If you want some cheaply made piece that will fall apart in a few years, get Thorley or Pacesetter. Or paper towel tubes.

headers

Check out stans headers, they use a ball/cup design instead of flange/gasket where they connect to the exaust. I've wheeled hard with mine for a few years with no leaks

4:1 vrs try-y, brand x is better than brand y cuase it cost more, what ever. Thorley makes a ceramic coated header to for a higher cost.

Top end vrs torque.

Wily not being rude but search, not just YT there's alot of 411 on the net, this out for yourself this will go around and around and get nowhere. Good luck and good searching.

Cool, never seen them before. Even gives the option of 3/8th flange. Do they include O2 bunge and if so where is it located?

Yeah, I know and I have. Been doing a lot of reading. I just like to see everyone's opinions, some opinions on here are worth gold and some that well. I tried to let the thread die, but it keeps coming back.

Thanks for the Stan's headers tip, very interesting.
