22RE fuel pressure problem

Hi all,

I put a rebuilt 22RE in my 1992 pickup, and had the injectors cleaned while it was apart. It then had a misfire, which I figured out was a bad injector. It has been hard to start when hot (have to crank for 10-15 seconds) since I replaced the engine and had a rough warm idle, even after replacing the bad injector. I checked the fuel pressure today and found all readings in spec, except it doesn't hold pressure after shutting off the engine and I can hear what sounds like an air leak from somewhere towards the rear of the engine on the fuel rail with the key on and fuel pump jumpered. I can't pinpoint the leak. My thought is that another injector is bad, maybe not completely but not spraying a full pattern and bleeding off. I don't see any fuel leaking anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

-Jon

The fuel pres regulator is at the rear od the fuel rail, and it will make a squirting sound

If pressure falls off fast, and the imjectors aren't leaking, it is either the FP regulator or a bad pump (check valve)

My pressure falls off pretty fast after shutdown also. Maybe 5-6 seconds after I turn the key off, the pressure goes to zero.

It's not ideal, but as long as your fuel pressure is good while you're running AND you're not leaking fuel at the injectors, it shouldn't cause problems with the way your rig runs.

How do you check fuel pressure on a 22RE? My 87 4runner is running bad. It revs fine until when it doesn't have a load on it. But when your driving especially in 1st gear when you hit about 2500 to 3000 rpm it just stops like it hits a rev limiter. I wanted to check the fuel pressure to see if the pump could be the problem

I installed a pressure sender in the end cap of the fuel rail:

I've heard you can piece together some parts from NAPA to rig up a port for a pressure gauge off the cold start injector.

Is there a check valve in the pressure regulator? If pressure is leaking down overnight could it be the regulator?
