22re Engine harness and knock sensor problems

Ok, here is the deal:

My mechanic told me that my check engine light is on due to my knock sensor and engine harness not being connected like it should. (can't get the wire to stay where it needs to be) he said he needs another wiring harness where he can cut the end off with the plug and splice it together with the old one in order for it to stay connected correctly. he was going on and on about this and it all sounds greek to me so i hope this makes sense to you all. (does it?) lol i was also told that due to the knock sensor/check engine light, my timing is retarded and it is causing a lack of power as well.

is there anything i can do to keep this from happening? can i rig something up to correct this problem? he siad he could just get the pin from the new harness and use it to connect to the one i already have. can this be fixed? i hope this makes sense and thanks for all of the help.

also, does anybody have an engine harness for a 22re motor or do you know if an engine harness from a 22ret would work too? thanks!!

I had the same problem FOREVER! It drove me nuts. Luckily on our 22re's the knock sensor is really easy to get to.

I ohmed the wire out and it was fine all the way to the ECU, so I knew the wire were fine.

The wire is just a single black wire with a "shield" braid around it. I've read where if the shield got brittle or ungrounded, there would be noise in the signal and throw the code. So I soldered the thing to ground really good, but that didn't help either.

So, I gave up and paid for a knock sensor. I've heard they rarely ever go out, so I was hesitant on getting one.

Well I got a new one, and this time I freaking soldered the wire to the connector on the sensor to MAKE SURE there was a good connection...lol...and that did it!

I don't know if it was the connector/connection or the sensor itself, but it's fixed, I don't care.

yeah, the harness came in yesterday and he took the plug off immediately and it snapped into place. the problem is, my wire won't stay in the new plug so he is going to cut my old knock sensor wire off and splice the new one in and plug it up. hopefully it will fix the problem!!! we will see today!!

Make certain he solders the splice or you are in for a repeat down the road...

I don't understand why he didnt do that in the first place. NOw you have a harness that you don't need?

I think you are right. He spliced the wires today (because he has done that before and it has worked) and the check engine light is still on. (knock sensor)

If he was to have soldiered the wires together, would that have fixed the problem? It is still there because he is going to do some research on it and wants to get it fixed so I will mention that to him. I hope he knows how to do that.!!!

If he was to run a wire from the ECU directly to the knock sensor, would that fix the problem? Just a suggestion!!

Well, I needed the clip/plug that holds the wire in place. The only way to get the plug was to get another harness. I only spent 74 dollars on the harness and I figure it is good to have just in case, you know?

Yeah it should be fine if the light hasn't come back on.

With the knock sensor, it throws the code within like 1/8th of a mile, so if it stays off it's probably fine.
