22RE Code 71 EGR Delete - resistor fix

Hi Everyone,
My 1985 4runner is running a 1994 22RE with the original 1985 intake manifold. Ever since I got it, its had the CEL on because of code 71. The PO removed the EGR system and make the engine swap. I'm now trying to fix the CEL with the resistor hack across the EGR temp sensor to help the ECU think the EGR system is working properly. Problem is, all write ups and questions dont seem to include any pics of the connector and resistor being installed. I found this forum but I dont seem to have this connector https://www.toyota-4runner.org/class...agnostics.html

Question is, anyone know what the EGR temp sensor connector looks like in a 1985 22RE?
Appreciate the help! Thank you.

Thinking it might be this connector. Thoughts?

In 1994, the leads to the EGR Temp Sensor are BR-B and G-W.
While the 2-pin connector pictured might be the right connector, there are lots of 2-pin connectors. Identifying one just by eye is pretty tricky.

Pretty sure it's 1985 ECU. I believe the PO took the long block from the 1994 and plugged it into the truck. That square connector is not plugged to anything. I also have a spare circular connector (like the water sensor connector) but I don't think it would be it. By spare, I mean it's not plugged to anything.

Any idea on coloring for 1985 leads to the EGR temp sensor?

They might be the same. Have you checked the leads to the connector in the photo? No point making the rest of us guess.

I'll check when I get home after work. Thanks for the input! Just didn't seem to find a lot of info while searching.

1985 doesn't have the EGR temp. sensor. Don't know when it starts, but my 1987 and 1988 22RE's both do not have an EGR temp. sensor.

Huh? I took the word of the PO that the CEL was on due to the EGR delete he did. I'll pull the codes myself tonight and check the wiring on the connector. If no EGR sensor then I would assume no Code71.

Yes, I would check for codes to see what they actually are before going further. There was no such thing as a code 71 for these trucks back in 1985. The earlier ECUs only used codes 1-13 or so and to figure out what codes you had, you just counted the number of consecutive flashes. The later ECUs had a "two-digit" setup where the first set of flashes indicate the first digit of the code and the second set of flashes indicate the second digit of the code.

Do you have a "diagnostic box" near your fuse box or do you have round diagnostic connectors on the driver's side near the ignition coil?

You could have components from different years that can make this tricky.

Here is 4Crawler's code write-up that may help you sort out what is going on: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TroubleCodes/

Yes, check the codes yourself. Good luck!

Indeed

Checked the codes. Got code 5 and code 2.
For code 2, I had the started the engine without the intake tube installed so guessing its OK (fingers cross).
For code 5, going to replace the O2 sensor tomorrow. I have brand new (reman) injectors from 22reperformance so thinking they're OK.

The subject of this thread no longer makes sense. @arlindsay1992 hit the nail in the head. If anyone out there has an early 22RE with no EGR, there is no EGR temp sensor and no need for a resistor fix.

Replaced the O2 sensor, code 5 keeps coming up. Something else is wrong.
Thanks everyone for your input!
