22RE, best replacement motors?

So if you were replacing your 22re with a new one, what builder would you go with? Without breaking the bank. Say in the $2000-2300 (long block) and less range. ATK? They seem to have a good reputation. How about Jasper? They are a bout $400 more. Worth it? Any others?

Option (and opinion) #1: Who ever costs the most money. You gotta pay for quality on a Toyota. And don't say the 100,000 miles you get out of quality OEM part that costs $200 and a part that costs $50 at Napa and lasts 20,000 miles isnt worth it.

Option #2: Rebuild it yourself.

You will prolly go through abut 3 engines before you build one good one. But you can bet with your time and energy invested in it, it won't be a shoddy, questionable rebuild you buy from some guy at $2,000.

I wish I had the time to learn and do it myself. I don't. I want to drive the truck into a shop and drive out with a new motor that will last me another 100K+ miles. I don't mind writing a check to do so.

dang, I forgot...

I kinda hate rebuild questions b/c there are so many varying degrees of "rebuilding".

You could take the block to a machine shop and have it cleaned and fluxed.

When you get it back all you would (loosely) have to do is re-assemble and torque it.

I used to get my heads done, and have only used one guy and that cost me $100. So I have NO idea if that's even an average going rate.

But I can tell you having the block and head redone and you reassembling it with top quality OEM parts will save you prolly over $1,000.

I would love to do that, but I have a little baby at home, a full time job and VERY little free time. As much as I like to save money, in this instance again, I'd rather just write the check.

OK, I did some searching and have come to a bit of a conclusion. Correct me if I am wrong on any of this...

ATK: Hit or miss. Some good and some problematic. Good warranty (but good chance you'll need it)

Oregon Engine Rebuilders: Sounds pretty good. Good price. Just leery about a small outfit far away from me. Excellent warranty.

Orient Engine: Sounds good but website is dead. Still in business?

Jasper: Sounds like they have a good rep. No bad reports found. Good warranty. Expensive. Worth it?

22re Performance: Good rep. Fair price. Only has 12K warranty.

Anybody actually have a motor from any of these outfits? Would love to hear the good, bad and ugly.

I just put in a new motor from 22re preformance and I could not be happier with the engine. It is truley a bolt on, drop in motor. I only have about 200 miles on it so far, but everything super quite and it has lots of power. I had jim put nothing but OEM parts from the dealer (oil pump, water pump, and all seals and gaskets).

Here it is new

sunwest auto engines good motor. I lost the headgasket but that may have been more me than the builder. I replaced it with OEM though. They gave me excellent customer support.

Thumbs up

I can vouch for Jasper. I had a long block put in a couple years ago and it's been perfect. My bill was about $4500 which included labor and a lot of new parts (starter, clutch, fuel filter, motor mounts, etc.) surrounding the engine. I've put 30,000 miles on it and am totally happy with it. Just had the valves adjusted and it's running great.

I had an ATK rebuilt 22RE long block installed in 2003. The timing chain guides were broken from the start(I later found out), and by 2008(at 30K), it had developed various oil leaks, coolant leaks, scary knocking at hot start, various other problems that I have blanked out of my mind at this point; it probably would have run another 30K miles, but at an unknown cost of repairs to keep it going...maybe into the thousands of dollars. Since the head and block were unrebuildable, I essentially had a 22RE built from scratch by a REAL rebuilding shop here in the L.A. area: Eddings Engine Rebuilders in San Fernando. Balanced, using all Toyota parts(except for the new chinese head), deluxe. It wasn't cheap: about $4000 including r&r and good follow up.

If I were to buy a rebuilt 22RE, depending on my budget I would go with either Oregon Engine Rebuilders or 22RE Performance if I could afford it.

Just out of curiosity, how much could I expect to pay for a "good sort of low mileage" 22re out of a junkyard?

I'd go with a local machine shop that has been in business for at least 5 years, most bad business wont survive that long.

I just had my 22re done at a local shop that has been in the same building since the 80's and couldn't be happier with it.

They did ALL machining in house and completely rebuilt her for $1200.00 including tracking down the ridiculously large LC valves.
