i just picked up a 86 standard cab 4x4 with a 22r. motor has 140,xxx miles on it and it runs like a champ! im a newbie when it comes to 22r engines. i was wondering if there is a big difference between the 22r and 22re besides the 22re is efi. does carburated play a big role when wheeling?? any info is greatly appreciated. thanks

No mechanical differences other than efi. 22re has a little more power when both are stock. the big difference is that the efi isn't affected by angles like the carb is. the carb will bog out if you get on an extreme angle.

I've actually never had a bogging or sputtering problem with my aisin carbed 22r. I have more problems with running out of gear and stalling out on forward progress than with high angle carb problems. I'd suggest that you at least go out an wheel it for a while before you decide to spend money on making a swap to efi. Maybe you're not doing stuff that it makes a difference. I haven't had a problem and I've gone on some faily hardcore stuff.

22re is diffrent block and head than 22r. Wheel for a while before you decide wether or not to make the change.

The 22r only requires Fuel, Air, & Spark to run. If something goes tits up on the 22r it's pretty simple to trouble shoot. The 22re is injected so a lot more can go wrong. IMO, if you're new stick with the 22r until you understand the basics. Once you've got a handle on it swap it out for the 22re which I feel is the superior engine.

EFI swaps are routinely done and well documented on the web. If you can wrench, you can likely gitter dun.

ive been wheeling for a while. this is actually my first 22r. ive had 22re's and v6 toyotas. ill try go wheeling with it soon......its still stock with mt's so im gona chance it and try it out..
