1987 22r 212k miles. Needs head gasket, timing chain guide and is leaking. From the research I've done its about $1500 to have it done or do it myself. Looking for any advice. What should I do. Anyone know a good shop in the central Cali area? I'm in Fresno

 

how mechanically inclined are you? and do you have the tools? if you do it yourself, order parts from 22reperformance, engnbldr, and lcengineering.

I'd say if you're looking to put in a new engine, why not take a look at the engine swap section of the forums? For $1500, you could probably get a better engine (used) that will leave your old 22 in the dust. Just a thought.

Just to do the timing chain and head gasket??

A big difference.

Do you have the time place and know how.

It sucks to have things all apart and be lost

Pull your head off to find it warped or even cracked

Rebuilding you can figure worse case because till it is apart and measured you really don`t know what you might need.

 

I say get it rebuild at a machine shop that knows what they're doing and can provide you with what you want with a guaranteed warranty. Because by a remanufactured engine or used engine could be just another headache.

 

As yodafan93 points out, a rebuild requires some tools that you may not already have. Need to factor that into your costs.

If you go the long block route, avoid a bottom barrel pricing shop. Spend a little more for something from a reputable shop. Your future self will thank you.

The swap route is always a great option, plenty of resources available if your willing to put in the extra work.
