Truck has to be held into first gear
Just finished reassembling my 93 22re 2wd truck after a head and timing chain job. When I bought the truck it was not running and this is the first time I've tried to actually drive it. First thing I've noticed is that the truck must be held in 1st gear in order for it to engage unless it makes a horrible grinding noise. I did a little research on the topic.
I'm hoping that the transmission is not bad as the truck only has 98,000 miles on it. My search came up with a possible worn out shifter bushing and seat. If this is the case, this would be an easy and cheap fix but do the symptoms I described sound like this is the problem? Thanks!

I think if it was the bushing it would have the same problem in all of the gears, not just first. But I am not sure about the bushing. I know the one on my tranny is all worn out and it shifts just fine.
If you press the clutch pedal and shift does it grind? Or is it as soon as you let go of the stick it starts to grind like it wants to pop out of first?

So, I checked the shifter bushing and seat this morning and they are both fine. I cleaned them up and put it back together. The truck still pops out of first. I figured the next thing I will do is drain the old transmission fluid and replace it with the proper amount. Hopefully this makes a difference but if not I guess it's time for the transmission to come out.
