i bought a 86 toy with a 22r. the rods berrings are burned up and i was wondering if a 82 toyota 22r would fit in my truck?

It'll fit both the trans and motor mounts, but the exhaust will have to be modified a little to accept the older manifold.

 

My 87' has a pre-1984 22r, that has been converted to fuel injection. At some point the 22re must have taken a dump and the previous owner didn't know what to do (just guessing). Everything works fine. The two engines are nearly identical with the exception of fuel delivery, and a few other differences, such as the exhaust manifold and head.

 

You should be able to just put in the 82 engine and then use all the 86 efi stuff instead of the 82 carb intake etc. Is it the tip rod bearings that are bad. Rebuild kits from engine builder have those bearings. They may have to be sized for the wrist pin but it can be done at any machine shop. You can have a machine shop put them in for you too. It is pretty easy but just make sure you get the oil passage in the rod and the one in the bearing lined up or bad news bears.

 

That's not true. If it's an early head, it won't have mounting bosses for the EFI stuff.

If you're carbed, you can swap the motors without a problem.

If you're EFI, you need to consider how you're going to install the EFI components. You can't interchange early/late blocks and heads.

 

dcg9381 is right. The efi stuff for your 86 wont fit the 82 because toyota changed the blocks and heads in 1985. I thought it was before that. My mistake. However they did make some fuel injected 22re engines as early as 1983 that were used in celicas and some trucks. These used the earlier style head and had efi. This may let you keep your efi if you can get one. May just want to get new rods and rebuild what you got.
