I am putting the intake manifold back on the head. I notice a hole or port on the left hand end between two intake ports. I might be mistaken but I think it is between two intake ports.
Anyway I am concerned as I don't know what the function of the hole is. And it is not sealed off by the manifold. Only the manifold gasket covers the hole.

My first thought is that it is going into the water jacket. But nothing is actually sealing it off.

I'm baffled!

Any thoughts on this. This engine has a carburetor. And maybe the port is used when the engine is use with EFI.
I'll take a photo of where I am talkling about.
Help!

 

I noticed that the last time i did a head job and i have done several and never noticed it but its fine just leave it. Im not sure what its for but im guessing its a port used on a different setup like a celica or something.

 

Here is where the hole is, and the gasket partially covers the hole, but the manifold does not not seal the hole. You can see the discoloration on the manifold.

 

Its in-between cylinders 2 and 3. Thats same one i seen lol i even went to another truck that was running and was same way so i didnt worry about it. I still would be interested in knowing what it was used for.

 

It's a water passage. Your right manifold gasket is the only thing that seals the coolant from the intake runners and the outside. Heads are the same between the 85-95 22r's and 22re's. As a matter of fact that's the same passage in the intake manifold that has the thermostat housing.

 

No its not there is no coolent running through that port on the head. Been there done that.

He says between 2 - 3 but the photo shows 3 - 4. There IS coolant inside almost the entire Carb intake manifold BTW. But I want to say it's supplied through the heater core bypass system. 2 - 3 is the thermostat passage. While the 3 - 4 passage is blocked off at the manifold itself. That 3 -4 passage I have seen both open and closed in the head itself. But I haven't seen an intake manifold either 22r or 22re have that same passage opening in the intake itself.

 

Its been awhile since i ran across it so was mistaken on where it was but corrected my self. To make a long story short there is nothing running through that port. Finish you head job and i bet its fine.

 

Yes the the arrow is pointing at the gasket between ports 3 & 4.
I didn't mean to confuse anyone when I wrote "between the two intake ports".

I concur. Nothing to worry about. The intake itself is blocked off. As long as you got a good seal on the intake manifold and the manifold isn't warped, your good to go.
