22R hard to start

Hi there,

1995 RN105 4x4 single cab 22R petrol

I've recently had my carb rebuilt and when I first got the car back from the garage, it would start first go. Nowadays, I need to pump the accelerator atleast 8 times before it will start. If I don't pump at all, then there is no chance of it starting. I've had the carb rebuilt, new plugs, new fan belts, rotor etc

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Lack of fuel getting to carb?

Any help would be highly appreciated

Cheers.

I would check my accelerator pump and also check the tube that runs from it.

This is actually a common scenario after a caburetor rebuild.

The fuel in the float bowl will drain out, into the intake manifold, after the vehicle has been sitting awhile or overnight. When the fuel drains out, the engine takes longer to start because the mechanical fuel pump has to first pump fuel into the carburetor at the correct level. After this, then there will be enough gas so that when you pump the gas pedal, fuel will squirt into the carburetor to start the engine.

Check was the others have mentioned already.

Also check the fuel level in the float bowl on the next cold engine start via the sight glass. It is supposed to be in the middle. You can wiggle the front end up and down to see if the fuel sloshes around the sight glass.

You had the carb rebuilt at a shop? How long ago? Not sure how stuff works down under but I'd be back at the shop having them fix their rebuild. Is the choke working?

Yes, was rebuilt at a local mechanic shop. I'll be seeing them next year hopefully.

I checked the float bowl level this morning and there was no fuel inside (car was not driven for a day or two)

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how do I check if the choke is working?

Thanks for all the help so far

If you remove the air cleaner you should see the choke flaps closed over the top of the carb (tap the pedal once first and they should flip shut), then start the truck and let it warm up, they should move and allow full air flow and a normal idle.

Alright, will give that a go. How do I go about fixing the excessive pumps which is required to start it? I'm guessing the choke isn't doing it's thing and that's why there's no fuel in the fuel bowl the next day?

I read through both your threads mate and will be replacing the gaskets that are leaking as I had a look at my carb earlier and there appears to be a small leak from the base of it.

Every morning when I look through the sight glass, it is completely dry and empty. Then comes the daily ritual of 8-10 pumps to start it..

Did you find a solid fix at all for your truck?
