22R guys needs 22RE help
So I've come into possession of a 22RE rig. For argument's sake, let's say it's a truck.
I still need to hear exact details of it's coming to be non-running, but the gist of it is:
Started using water, more and more, until one day "Pop", radiator empty, won't start. I'm not sure if it died when it went pop, or if it went pop, they parked it, and then it wouldn't start.
No water/oil mixing going on. Coolant loss was due to a massively split lower radiator hose. Timing chain intact, chain guides good, tensioner seems good, don't think it has jumped timing.
Fuel pump comes on with test jumper, and plugs are wet and smell like gas when cranked. Checked the circuit opener relay, it was fine.
Plugs were Autolites, and 1-3 could be removed by hand. Wires/cap/rotor were crap too. Replaced plugs/rotor/cap/wires with known good factory stuff. Spark seems weak, but it's there. (screwdriver held by a ground method of testing).
I've stuck and Ohm meter on the negative terminal and the head. Even though the grounds look crappy, the resistances are OK, 6-8.
All valves were way too tight, so I adjusted them.
All fuses good.
It turns over strongly, but it doesn't even sputter or try to catch it seems like.
Anything obvious I'm missing? Thanks

I got a truck from a guy that did the same thing. 22RE's have Alum heads and it does not take much to melt it. This engine I got the head had melted between the 3 and 4 cylinders. Do a compression/leakdown test. What I did was pump air into the spark plug hole of each cylinder with both valves closed and listen to where the air went. In this case out the number 3 spark plug hole.
Just my experience with over heated 22RE's.

Timing seems fine, chain tight, guides good, rotor points where it should.
Held a plug directly to the neg terminal of the batt and got VERY weak spark. It's definitely getting fuel.
It was throwing codes 7 and 11. Adjusted the TPS and now it's just throwing 7 (still a TPS problem).
I Ohm'ed out some known good coils and got the same numbers, so I don't think it's the coil.
Would a good coil/dead ignitor give very weak spark? Everything else I can test seems OK.

It sound like the pick up coil inside the distributor os going bad, mine did! I replaced the TC and adjusted the valves running like a top, backed out of the drive way and it died. Pick up coil inside dist. came apart and copper windings everywhere inside dist. housing. just my thoughts!

trx125 you may have hit the nail on the head. We'll find out tomorrow.
It's now no longer throwing any codes, has fuel, etc. I've tried another good coil and another good ignitor and still nothing.
It's gotta be down to the pickup coil now, right? I can't think of a single other thing that would cause this.

Pick up coil Ohmed out, but it's only getting spark intermittently on cyls 2-4. I've tried new everything else, that's sort of all it can be, right?

Check the gap between the pickup coil and the signal generator in the distributor on all 4 of the signal generating points. If the distributor shaft is slightly bent or the bushings are worn then it might cause that problem. I think the gap is suppose to be .02", but I could be wrong.

Well, this problem has taken a backseat for now... since the head it toast
I started filling the cooling system, and it took about 3.5 gallons and started coming out the exhaust. Pulled the head and 6/8 valves are burn/bent (not sure which).
Whatever the case, I'm glad I have a spare head lol.

Compression check would of told you this from the beginning =P
