22R gurus (Pre 84 vs post 84)

So I've got a 91 4wd pickup with a 3.0 5spd.
I'm looking at pulling the drivetrain and installing a 22r 5spd from an 84 2wd pickup to get some decent mpg.

As far as the 22r goes is the pre 84 engine OK or should I look for the newer post 84 engine. I'm not sure what the differences are but I think there's a difference in the head and pistons. (???)

The 22r engine is carbed and I'll be pulling out the front diff out of my truck basically making it into a 2wd

Thoughts?

i think the pre 84 had shorter blocks and taller heads then the post 84 along with duel row timing chains verses single row. correct me if im wrong.
