Not to knock the excitement over the vaccum lines, but I didn't see it mentioned that he has two fuel filters. The one by the gas tank he covered, but what about the one between the fuel pump and carb? Mine is a few years older, did the newer models not have one?

My truck, 83 hilux was giving me almost exactly the same problem as described. Running perfect, then under a long load, like driving up a gradual hill, it would fade out, like I was out of gas. Would start up fine after. I removed the fuel filter at the tank, (easier to push gas then suck it) and replaced the one between the fuel pump and carb, with a decent, high flow filter.

Whatever it turns out to be, keep us posted.

ok, here's what i need to know. See this guy here:

See how the hose goes all the way around and plugs into the thermo valve. right now i have the one circled in red in the last post plugged into that (the one coming from the carburetor)

The one that is supposed to be going to the thermo valve is currently plugged into the air filter assembly near the side. There's a spot for a small hose there, marked in red on the following pic:

If i get a splitter so i can hook the one from the carburetor properly AND i hook the other one properly into the thermo valve, what am i supposed to plug into the air filter assembly?

I see from my book that there is a hose plugged into there. It just doesn't tell me which one, of course.

Hope this helps. I was having a little trouble describing earlier.

not sure im following here...

Hook the hose (like shown in the pic i posted).

the skinny one on the pass side of the carb hooks into the shroud right where you have the red line.

I dont know what other hoses you havent hooked up at this point? Theres only two hoses that hook into the shroud I think.

man ill have to look at my engine tomorrow im confused lol

I two trucks, one is cali- and one isnt, both 87 22rs

I never had so much trouble with the vaccum lines, they all seemed (both engines) seemed straight forward lol

buy a splitter at a parts store. should have one.

You said pre-owner messed with the lines so its possible the engine is missing hoses and parts (like that splitter).

Also, the lines that go to the thermo, mc valve are hard lined and built into the shroud, theres a skinny line that stretches out to the HAI tho.

the diagram above isnt really accurate sicne you cant actually see the line that goes tot he thermo from the carb connection.

here's the bottom of the shroud, assembly, whatever it's called:

The top is where the skinny tube on the pass side hooks in, correct. Like here:

And the bottom is where the larger tube hooks in, on the white part, correct? Like on the box here:

The circled part on that picture is where i'm having the confusion and where this tube is currently going:

Does this help?

I don't think anything goes into this. this doesn't lead anywhere. it goes straight up inside the shroud and has a little opening that isn't even big enough to hook a hose onto.

The hose (skinny thing you said just dumps into the shroud). Thats capped on the Cali models.

I didnt get a good picture of the thermo valve plumbing, sorry. If you need one just holler.

on non cali models that isnt capped, theres a thing called a VCV that connects into that (whats capped).

awesome, awesome, awesome. That fixes everything. I'm going to run at lunch and get a splitter for the hose coming off the carburetor and a cap for the other one.

thanks, dude. i'll let you know how she runs after and hopefully tonight i'll raise a beer in celebration.

damn. i mean damn. it feels great. when i started it after work, it took some time to warm up, but once it warmed up...i dunno...it felt TOO powerful.

only thing is it seems like it idles really high, but it's holding strong and doesn't feel like it's gonna die on me.

lol, i'm probably just used to having a messed-up truck, but this does NOT feel like the same truck. talk about torque.

Will keep you posted after timing. gonna go for a drive and have a beer!

You can adjust the idle pretty easily, it's just a screw on the throttle. =)
