22r to 22re

i just got a used 22r that i am planning on rebuilding. i was wondering if the fuel injection off the 22re will mount up to the 22r head.

i am not sure how i am going to build the engine, but if i do put a 20r head on top of the 22r block, will the fuel injection mount up to that?

what would you guys rather do?

Fuel injection will not work with the 20R head.

Fuel injection (plenums) may bolt up to later year heads, generally 84-85 and Celica.
There are 3 cases:

1) No mounting bosses.
2) Mounting bosses, no holes.
3) Mounting bosses and holes.

I'd buy an intake manifold gasket and see what you've got in terms of holes..

so if i go with the 20r head it would make more sense to go with the carbureators instaed of trying to retrofit the 22re fuel injection on it. i probably would go with either dual mikunis or dual webers if i decide to go with the 20r head.

i want to build a truck with a power plant that will produce more power than a stock 22r or 22re. ive seen turbo setups, and i did love them, however i wouldnt have enough money to either build or maintain a high power 22ret. i havent really researched that much with the combination of the 22r block with the 20r head but i was told that they can produce a punch.

two things i want to keep in mind while building this project is reliability and gas mileage. you guys have any suggestions or setups you reccomend and/or have tried?

thanks

I've done the swap from carb to 22re and the only thing that made it worth it really was the fact I was building a crawler. I am a dunce when it comes to wiring and I'm not even that good at taking a motor out, putting one in and making it work so I had/paid my mechanic to do it. If I was to do it agian I would scrounge up a 2.7 with the related parts for the power gain because it would literally cost just as much aside from exhaust re-routing etc. If you can do the work yourself, then it becomes what it is worth to you. A little mpg gain, a little power gain, and an excellent reliabilty gain on inclines and in general is what you end up with. A 2.7 would be my choice if I was given your situation again. I can do a lot of things to a vehicle but motor/wiring work is not my bag.

3.4 toy swap... or 3.8/4.3 gm swap.
you aren't going to get much more from the 22r/re in the mileage department than you already get.
well, maybe you could go diesel or propane...

I had the entire donor vehicle so I pulled out the engine and dash wiring harness, high pressure fuel lines, gas tank, exhaust manifold, and all the EFI components (intake, head)

It was alot of work but it runs great in higher altitudes and runs at any angle
