What's really impressive about it as well is the fact that the Toyota engineers were able to make more numerical torque than horsepower (i.e. 116 hp/142 lb-lbf. for a 22R-E versus 128 hp/109 lb-lbf. for a 4A-GE).

Why is "make more numerical torque than horsepower" impressive?
Its just a number.

the torque thing has to do with crankshaft throw length. and yes, most trucks, and plenty of cars make way more torque than they do hp. I'm pretty sure all of the 20r based engines made more torque than hp.
