22-re mystery vibration

Hey guys, I have yet another noise related thread to add to the countless here on yotatech. I have a '94 4runner with a 22-re and a 5 speed. The engine has just under 50,000 miles on it since previous owner had stealer rebuild it. And same for the clutch. The noise I'm getting is a random ticking from the middle of the valve cover towards the back. It's only doing it from 2k rpm to 2,500 rpm. And it only does it while letting off the gas and gradually accelerating. If I mash on the gas pedal to go fast, It doesn't surface. The valves were adjusted two weeks ago and I found all of the intake valves were too tight. But it's made this sound since I bought it back in august. My old '84 truck made similar noise, but not random. I've checked the exhaust manifold and pipe, and u-joints ect. Other than this annoying vibration it runs perfectly. Has anyone else experienced this? Plus, I've read all of the threads about noises on here just so noone tells me to research before posting a new thread! Thanks!

All spark plugs tightened to the proper spec? Might be a loose plug hissing at you.

is the noise louder when the engine is cold? If so I would say that is "normal" piston slap for a 22R-E

Yeah, I checked the plugs and everything else. It makes this sound all of the time hot or cold but only between 2,000 and 2,500 rpms. Its intertmittent within a 500 rpm range. It seems louder inside the truck while driving. Like a vibration coming up into the interior. I don't think its anything serious, but it's extremely annoying!

I'll have to check out the heat shield on there, good thinking. I'll do so and keep my fingers crossed!

My 87 was doing the same thing. Adjusted the valves and it helped,(a little) but when I was puting the valve cover back on, I realized it wasn't as loud when I didn't tighten the cover too much. I thingk the cover was just way to thight. Sounds much better now. Just keep an eye and make sure its not to loos either. The oil will leak out between the cover.
