Take a trip to your local wrecking yard and look for gen 2. See how they are mounted and you will see this could be quite the undertaking. Not that it could not be done but you have to do some engineering. I don't think they put shoulder belts in gen 1's as it was not required in passenger vehicles until Dec of 1989 (was the end of gen 1's) with light trucks, SUVs and convertibles until Sept 1991.(see http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...te/808945.html)
Manufacturers generally don't do things that are more expensive without a law to mandate it. NOt saying it can't be done and that its not a good idea, but like I said you might want to take a trip to the wrecking yard and see just what Toyota did in gen 2 and 3's. The parts would not be too expensive, but the mounting might be more then you are willing to do to ensure the safety of your rear passengers. Heck of an idea and would make a gr8 tech write up. Good luck

Shoulder belts were available as an option on the Gen 1s, but there were not very many sold. They attached to the roll bar in 2 places I believe. I've not found any in yards here in Colorado. I don't remember if you can still get them from the Dealer or not. I'd bet not, but you never know.

First, I KNOW there is at least one thread on this, so search! All the information is there on the OEM belts, options and aftermarket.

1st gens had rear shoulder belts as a Canadian option, same part no. for both sides, and I got mine from the dealer last year for under 200 bucks and they replace both the lap and shoulder belts. The shoulder belts bolt in one place on the roll bar. It might be possible to retrofit something else on, but I would be concerned as to whether it would automatically tension tight in the case of an accident.

Email me if you have any more questions.

The threaded mounting locations on the roll bar are for shoulder belts. Federal (US) regulations required mounting points for the belts, but the actual shoulder belts were not required back then.

Here is the earlier thread:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/1st-gen-rear-seat-shoulder-belts-installed-80736/

I have installed the belts from the aftermarket vendor (GotBelts.com) and I like them.

Good luck.

And the holes are not metric, they're a 5/16s (or so) FINE thread.
Don't try to force a metric bolt in, you'll screw up the threads.

Wabbit's right, and I have been wanting to put a set in mine. I had a few riders at Tellico last go round, but I stayed on the easier trails for other reasons.

I don't know that I believe you on the metric part. I might have to verify this tonight to satisfy my own curiosity. I can't see any bolt on an old Toyota not being metric.

Stay tuned...

Thanx for the info. Do your aftermarket seat belts retract like the stock ones? Do they get realy tight like the original ones, and to loosen em you have to take the seat belt off? I hate that, well, my passengers hate it. They seem to ratchet tighter and tighter the more bumps I hit.

I doubt it. Don't they all have the same roll bar? I have an 89 with the bolt holes in the roll bar. Didn't the older 4runners have em too?

The older 4runners have the mounting hole on the rollbar as well. There was a thread on this if I remember right.
You can buy them from Toyota or use the ones that are mentioned in this thread:

They do retract automatically, but they don't have the ratchet locking mechanism that requires the seatbelt to be undone to loosen. They will automatically lock when needed and release, like on a hard stop. The retractor goes on the lower bolt hole on the roll bar. Just keep that in mind when stuffing things into the back. You don't want to interfere with the belt.

As for the threads, they are SAE not metric. This was a surprise to me when I installed them. I had my metric wrenches with me, and I had to go find my standard ones to install.

One the ones from GotBelts.com came with all the hardware necessary for installation (at least on the SR5). I did not have to get anything else. Same with the Toyota parts.
