Still common practice in other countries to cut off their hands. America is too sissy-fied. I keep my rifle loaded and ready to go. If they are lucky, they'll get away without my knowledge. If not, they will be pissing themselves.

I have the Grant removable wheel and lock as well, it seems to be very secure. The wheel really locks on tight, no play at all and with the wheel off, no way to steer. This is especially true to the hydraulic assist steering, with the engine off, it is very hard to steer with the wheel in place and darn near impossible with the wheel off.

my brother's vw bettle was stolen from the front of the house (when i lived in california) and he had a removable steering wheel. when we found the carcass we saw that they had pushed it from behind with another vehicle (probably a truck) and had used a vise grip to steer.

the best anti theft device is a secured garage.

second best was what my neighbor used to secure his restored mazda rx-2 (also highly sought after by thieves): he'd gotten a hold of one of those car boots (you know the sort they stick on your car when you don't pay your tickets) and he used that with a hardcore lock.

bottom line (as others have said), if they want it, they will get it.

cable through a wheel and around the frame... or similar?

I mean, who cares if they start it... but as long as they can't drive it?

If you're talking about the same kind of cable they use in bike locks, let me point out that those are very easily defeated. I work in a bicycle salvage shop, and when we get a bike with that kind of lock on it, we just snip it off with tree trimmers.

On a standard truck I've seen a link to a chain welded on each of the two shifters and a lock on it. So the truck is stuck in 4lo and rev(shifters are closest) when its locked. Just carry the key with you on your key chain. I like this idea for 4runner with the top off...

If they are using flatbeds though there isn't much that will stop them.

That locking shifter trick is a great idea! Especially if you've got 4.7's. "If you want it, you can take it.... as long as you don't mind driving backwards at 2 mph!"

Never have I worried about theft. But there's some great ideas here and I might install a switch or two.

At the same time, the early toyotas around here are generally worthless and not worth stealing.
One word.... IOWA. Thieves would have to go thru many confields, too much work.
