Everyone seems to have kill switches here and there for:starter, fuel pump, etc. But, I think the experienced thieves know how to get around those things for the most part. Santa Cruz and San Jose have been getting hit pretty hard lately with stolen rigs. I try to keep mine in safe locations for the most part. But, if they want it, they'll take it. Keep good insurance on it. At least you will get something if it's taken. Nice Runner by the way.

Yea so after one of my runners was stolen recently and whats happening in santa cruz Ive been thinking about this very thing .
I am putting alot of money in this 1st gen and would hate for some crack head or whatever to get a hold of my 1st gen , and like others here have said if they want it they will take it somehow.
Ive been looking into GPS tracking devices for my 1st gen , But ive found most of these require monthly charges (sucks ) except one I came across .
You hide it in your truck with a prepaid sim card (no monthly fees) then you only have to activate it when your vehicle gets stolen, supposedly the batteries last up to 3yrs on sleep mode (not activated). IM gonna keep looking but this one seems ok . Im still looking around because its not cheap .
any way here is a link to the one Im talking about.

Grant Removable Steering Wheel and Locking Steering Column
Good Car Alarm
That'll stop most of the meth heads and retards, not a true car thief, but I can't see a pro wanting your 89 anyway.

I am constantly paranoid and pull a number of engine componets to disable the vehicle ie. dizzy, electronic signal connector, idle cut off, fuel pump fuse, take the coil wire with me, the list goes on and on I dont want to give youall my disableing features....but you get the idea I figured It woudl take a a little bit of trial an error for someone to figure out how drive off

If that GPS system lasts "up to 3 years" how do you know when it actually has dead batteries? Whenit it is dead then you have to buy another one? Pricey indeed.
What about something like the wheel locks the cops use when impounding a vehicle. They write up a ticket and, if deciding to impound, they put this lock over a wheel that has an arm that hits the ground and therefore won't let the vehicle roll. That way the owner can't just drive it away before the tow truck comes for it.

im gonna wire in a couple of kill switches in my 2nd gen pickup..
the next truck i get is gonna have power windows FOR SURE..
an alarm system of some quality, 2 maybe 3 kill switches, and i'll probably end up getting a removable grant steering wheel and a steering column lock for when i leave the house for a few days..
where i live..there isnt many stolen vehicles..but i do get people drivin by my house real slow and scoping out my '80 thats sittin on blocks..damn thieves....

Just came across this thread....
My 4runners sit unlocked, tops off for months during the summer, and this for years.
Never have I worried about theft. But there's some great ideas here and I might install a switch or two.
At the same time, the early toyotas around here are generally worthless and not worth stealing.

Another cheap way of having gps in your rig is getting a disposable phone with gps and hiding it in your rig then you are able track it online. Only costs around $10 for 3 months
