i was wondering about that - the set i had was all bunchy. good idea on getting them cut down!

 

I am looking to do this and i was just going to go to a junk yard to get some 3 pt belts. Just so i don't grab the wrong ones. A toyota truck from 83-88 front seat belts. Also does the truck have the same bolts that i will need. Last where does the front part of the belt connect.

I used 3 pt belts from a 1993 Truck in my '89 1st Gen 4Runner. Be sure to get the female (buckle) side from donor vehicle also. My 4Runner originally had the backseat and belts added at the Baltimore Port and the belts they used were smaller than OEM Toyota. They have sort of a squashed world globe logo on them. I know others have the same because I've seen them for sale on eBay. Anyway, luckily I had both sides to exchange. The floor bolts fit fine. Get the bolts from the donor vehicle too becasue the bolts fit into the roll bar perfectly. So, to sum it up you can use belts from a 1989-1995 pickup as well. What you are looking for is belts with the plastic cover over the mechanism. I thought I was taking great pictures but this is all I can find:

I got a first generation front seat belt. The problem is that the top bolt on the roll bar won't fit in. What should i do.

 

Looks good. I pulled some out of the front of an isuzu Rodeo a few weeks back. I have yet to install them

 

Be sure you aren't cross threading the bolt. It should fit. It's been a couple of years since I did mine but I think it was a 14 or 15mm bolt. Try using one of the bolts that were holding down the old belts. You can always go to Home Depot and get one size larger and one size smaller to see what fits. Hardware store bolts aren't grade 8 auto bolts though so once you have the size you need to get the right ones from a junkyard or Advance auto online. Other bolts I've had to buy on the 4Runner are 1.5 thread if it helps.

 

just finished adding 3-point belts for the rear seats in my 1st gen 4runner. i tried to find some oem-belts, but was unsuccessful. so, i ended up using the rear belts from my '95 subaru legacy wagon that i just replaced w/the 4runner. the long and the short of it is, the belts are a direct replacement using the stock subaru hardware mounted in the stock 4runner mounting locations (roll bar, side panel, under seat).

the only thing that needs to be "adjusted" to accomplish this is to remove the subaru upper extension bracket from the belt loop that attaches at the upper point on the roll bar. on the suby, this anchors the belt to the roof structure, but isn't needed on the 4runner, since the roll bar mounting point serves this purpose. i used a grinder to remove the rivet/button that attaches the loop to the extender, and that was it (took about 1 minute with the grinder).

i don't know whether any other subaru belts will work, or if outbacks from the same year would work. my wagon was a plain legacy L wagon. '95 to '97 should be the same for the plain legacy wagons. i also used the suby center belt.

the only thing it doesn't provide is a cover for the retractors.

Thanks to this thread I just put belts from the back seat of a 3rd gen 4runner into my 87. Not the best swap but it works.





I might be able to put a few washers behind the top mount so it doesn't need to be twisted like that. Works fine as is tho.

 

Fits better than mine.

I used a bushing and a longer screw on mine.

 

somewhat ironic that the subaru belts fit better.

Ok I put 2 washers on there and it enables you to run it normal. Only spent $20 at the junkyard.

FWIW the factory option rear belts have the retractors in the same place the lap belts do. They're not on the roll bar they're in the side pocket.

You can't mount most seatbelts like that because the buckle is on the wrong side of the upper sliding mount.

If you can manage to find a set of junkyard belts that have the buckle between the slide and the reel they could be mounted like originals. That way the retractor reel is out of the sun and weather and not getting banged up by cargo.
