1st gear syncros....
Can anyone walk me thru changing the syncros for 1st gear? or maybe a link or some pics. Anything would be helpful, I have worked on my own vehicles for a long time but have never had to deal with transmissions other than changing the filter and fluid in an automatic chevette.
I have an 86 yota pickup 4wd 5 speed! It won't stay in first gear!
Please and thank you!!!

Also to change the synchro you will need some tools that most people do not have, like a bearing separator, press, sleeves for the press, Big clip removers, full assembly schematic. You have to take whole trans apart.
I had a blown input shaft and thought I would change it but buy the time I got into the trans it was a very big job without the proper tools. If the synchro is gone (prolly not as was mentioned above, I agree) it is WAY easier and cheaper to get another used trans. Just my 2 cents.
Also if your input bearing is going you can have a 1st gear pop out condition.
That bearing can be changed without to much trouble in your shop.

bigblock, what u talking about power shifting? u mean like doing burnouts? If so no, I ain't had the truck but like 3 months so if it was abused before that I don't know what they did, although it is fairly obvious they liked wheelin cause when I first got it I washed it 3 times in one week and everytime it had mud running out of every crevice!!! lol it even had mud piled up on the frame rails. It's a work in progress cause I still got to get a rebuild kit for the aisin hubs but can't find them, im thinking of getting NEW warn hubs from advanced, they should work fine!

well i checked with local parts store, they said that they didn't carry any shifter seat bushings (or many trans. PARTS). They said to check a junk yard or a dealer. Apon further investigation I DO belive that it MAY be the shifter seat bushing because the shifter jiggles ALOT and kind of clicks a little when you move it side to side when its sitting in first gear (thats without the engine running)
Thanks for the help guys! I don't think the junkyards around here keep many older vehicles, the price of scrap metal made them crush them if they were older than 10 years but i think the price droped again so they may slow down on the crushing for a while! I hope I can find a good one at the junk yards somewhere cause I ain't going to the stealership!!!

thank you guys for your input, I like both of them sites but have no credit card right now, and theres not a toyota dealership around here but luckily my mom is comeing up in a couple of days and Im gonna have her pickup the bushing at the dealership in Bristol, TN. Im actuall getting 2 pieces, one seat and the other I think the guy said goes at the end but all together its like 23 bucks for both parts, not to bad, I would have liked to have had that heavy duty stuff on Marlin Crawlers site but atleast I should be able to get it up and going agian! I'll let ya know if it worked! Thanx again for your help!

ok guys, I replaced the shifter seat bushing and the little thing at the end of shifter. No luck, took up some of the slack in the shifter but still no 1st gear. Back to the syncro? I'm watching a couple of junkyards for an 85 or older so I can do a SAS on the front, it should have the same tranny, right? Just want to swap tranies and get the problem fixed then Im gonna rip the old tranny appart to find out how it works!!
