Its not an 8 speaker system, its a 6 speaker system AFAIK. Two in the dash, two in the quarter panels, and two in the upper part of the rear of the roof, near the wiper motor.
2nd gen 4runners never had speakers in the door fromt he factory, that did not start until 3rd gens.

remember upgrading your speakers in the back is like going to a concert and facing the back wal the whole time. your soundstage should be in front of you. I have the kick panel enclosures for the second gen and i masaged them into my first gen. Out 6.25" infinity referances in them and tucked an xtant amp in the right rear storage cubby MB Quart sub in a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure. Eventually I wil replace the factory rears for a little ambiant sound and the rear seat passangers. Hope this helped god luck! I also have a single 10" heres a couple pics for views.

I also heard that some 2nd Gen 4Runners came with a CD player from the factory, and an 8 speaker system. I've called the dealership about this, and they confirmed it. I have never seen one with a factory option for an 8 speaker system, and I have no clue as to where they go. My guess would be the standard 4 speaker system is in it's correct place, and two more speakers are in the rear doors, and there must have been some tweeters or something on the pillar between the rear doors, and the rear side windows.

Have a '92 4Runner and never liked the quality of sound since I bought in '04. No problem, I listen to talk radio most of the time. Now my son is driving it and he wants an upgrade. I checked three different sources, including Crutchfield. All three said the front speakers were 4". Two said the back side panels were 5.25". I ordered some Polk Audio's for the front and back. The fronts fit directly into the OEM enclosures and sounded a lot better than the 3" Rockford Fosgates the previous owner installed (why did they do that?). Got in the back and pulled the entire right panel off and found an OEM enclosure (with a bunch of electronics - what?!?) with 4" Infinity KAPPA 42.5i installed - Stunned that it sounded so bad. Tried the new 5.25s and they DIDN'T fit - too big for the enclosure and no way to cut to fit. Did some more research and found out the OEMs were 5", which NO ONE makes (exect maybe Toyota), hence the 4"s. NOTE: The Infinitys were installed without the supplied crossover so the tweeters never worked. That explains the poor sound.
I know it would sound a lot better with bigger speakers, but I hate to do any cutting and am baffled (no pun intended) by the enclosure with all the electronics. ANY IDEAS??? Maybe I should just remove it and put in some 6.5 or 6x9s.

2nd gen 8 speaker system
Guys, here's the deal on the 8 speaker system.
There are 2 4 1/4" in the dash, 2 mid/tweeters up top in the back by above the window, 2 tweeters in the rear window posts, and 2 5" bass drivers in the rear side panels. There is a small amplifier/crossover in the dash under the ashtray that powers the rears. A few years ago I replaced the bass drivers, thinking they were regular speakers, and this is how I discovered the original setup. I ended up adding a free-standing subwoofer with great results other than the loss of space.
Now I am upgrading again. I am installing 8" Rockford Fosgate shallow mount sub woofers in the rear side panels, powered by a 200w x 2 alpine amp mounted under the front passenger seat that originally powered a single 12" sub. These two subs can be installed invisibly, with a custom built enclosure, behind the existing side panels. Instead, I'm having them surface mounted to allow more sound.
What I am trying to find out, without tearing everything apart twice, is the exact size of stock mids and tweeters in the rear so I can order them and do the install all at once. Has anyone ever replaced these?
I will happily supply pics once this is all done, thanks!

Sorry no exact measurements for you. They were smaller than a sodapop can I'm pretty sure. There was quite abit of room around them, the trim was already removed and so I don't recall what kind of molded in bits might interfer with them.
I didn't notice the others in the door area, are they in the B pillar, or the one I was in was only a 6 speaker system I'm not sure. It was probably just a 6 sspeaker system, since it had the powered amp in the rear boxes.
