I have a 1993 pick up, 22RE/5-speed.

it's a great truck, runs like a clock. however, of late it's been idling high on starting. it will idle at 2k rpm most cold mornings before dropping to 1k at warm idle. since winter ended its been cold starting at 2k and will slowly drop to 1k after a few stop signs. I believed it too be a faulty cold-start injector, however I stuck my tie under the gas pedal and gently lifted the pedal at a stop sign. I felt no obvious movement, but the idle dropped to a smooth 1k rpm.

what the hell is going on here?

 

Check at the throttle. You might just need to loosen the tension in your cable a bit.

Also, either you are a somewhat crazy businessman, or you misspelled 'toe.' Either way is funny to me

 

Happened to me about a hundred miles from home. Scared the crap outta me. Some 20w50 dripped on the throttle linkage at the TB helped me and has been great ever since. Just my two cents.

 

For starters 1k is way high of an idle for a 22re, it should be in the 750-850 range as is listed in the manual.

There are a few reasons this could be happening. Dirty throttle body, weak springs, or grungy throttle cable.

Being able to lift the throttle pedal indicates most likely a worn out spring on the pedal it's self. You can try replacing it or just add a helper spring. There should be some threads with pictures for adding helper springs to pedals around here somewhere, don't recall if it was a brake or clutch but it's here some where if you need pictures.

It's possible but unlikely the cable tension was set too high in which case you'll need to tweak that under the hood. Then make sure the stop nuts are well tightened.

 

X2 clean your throttle body and check for binding of your throttle cable.

 

Yeah my bad on the spelling. I meant "toe" thats what I get for swype texting the post during a lunch break.

I'll have to have a tinker with the throttle linkage during lunch today. As my luck would have it, I keep a spare bottle of oil and my tool kit in my truck so perhaps it'll work out...

there was just a thread on this the other day...check to make sure intake/throttle body is clean, especially the butterfly inside -- gunk it up here and you'll feel it in the pedal.

 

I started small and doused everything I could reach with PB Blaster. Looks like the gas pedal spring was all gummed up with grease, lint, hair and dirt. gave it a good soak and a wipe down- same with the throttle body. gave it a few revs while the engine was still warm and adjusted the idle accordingly. test drive went fine. I'll be doing more intensive cleaning later this weekend.

 

I've had a similar problem with my pickup and it was the steel braided wire rubbing on the metal inside the gas pedal cable coming out the firewall. rubbing and eventually failing(when I really needed it).
