1992 Power Steering Pump Replace or Rebuild?

Hey all, my girlfriends 1992 4x4 4runner with the 6.0 has a loud and leaky power steering pump with a wobbly pulley. I have a couple questions because I purchase parts. The seal on the back of the pump seems to be the source of the leak, rebuild kits dont seem much cheaper than a reman pump so I'm leaning towards the reman route. Which pump is recommended? If I buy a Cardone pump without the reservoir will the wobbly power steering pulley issue be fixed or do I need to buy a new pulley separately? Will I also need to buy new seals for attaching my original reservoir to the reman PS pump or do these reman pumps usually come with the reservoir seal? Thanks!

Power steering pump

I would replace your pump and pulley for sure. Napa should have everything for your vehicle. i recently replaced my ps pump and belts on my 93 four runner.

If you have the ability to rebuild, if it's a toyota part, that's what I'd recommend. At least that way you know the quality of work where you don't with a reman.

I agree with prcnctoyo, I prefer a good used oem part to anything aftermarket or sold as rebuilt.
My recommendation is to take it out and diassemble. Take pictures as you do, especially the vanes. Those are the one thing you need to get properly oriented when reassembling. But it's fairly straightforward.
As long as there's no metal damage in the pump it should be fixable.

If I go the route of rebuilding the OEM pump then would I need to purchase a new pulley to fix the bit of wobble I notice in the pulley or is a bit of wobble acceptable? Does anything in the pump seal kit affect the wobble in the pulley? Thanks

You'll have to get it apart and determine the cause of the wobble. I'm not sure what 4Runner you have(6.0?) but I'll guess the 3vze.
My pump had a bearing the shaft spun on, but yours may have a bushing.

It’s a 1992 4x4 manual with the 6.0 3vze. I suppose I can just wait and see what I find inside before buying the parts but it is my girlfriend’s daily driver.

Once you get the pump out you can put it in a vise and get a better idea on the pulley wobble. My guess is you may have a bent pulley. If the wobble was in the shaft that would be more involved. But if the shaft itself was wobbling that would mean the vanes weren’t spinning true, and that would be pretty noisey, I'd think.

if replacement is required Lares seems to make a pretty decent pump at a fair price.

I will add to this, my pump was leaking, I got a reman and mine went to the core, biggest mistake I’ve ever made with my truck. Still doesn’t feel right and I gave up. If I would have known better I would have created a catch can and emptied it every now and then…..yea I hate it

Figured I should update this post in case it helps anyone in the future. I picked up a $10 rebuild kit off amazon (sunsong) and rebuilt the pump a couple weeks ago. It was very easy, I highly recommend it to anyone trying to solve similar issues. The pump works well and no longer leaks.

Bravo! For the fix, but also for posting a conclusion.
