did you determine what caused the head gasket failure or just replacing everything it could be? is there any way to even tell what the problem was or just replace stuff?

Never really figured out what caused it although Im pretty sure it was the passenger side that went. All the pistons cleaned up easily (like they had been steam cleaned quite a bit..) whereas the other side had plenty of gunk.

Btw- This thing ended up taking 4 helicoils. 92 Toy- I'd prepare for it.

brackets

those brackets go in between the heads and valve covers, facing outwards, to hold the wires. They used to have black plastic covers for the wire harness... mine broke, so i just zip tied the wires to the bracket.

Ah fiddlesticks!

That one broke at probably 40 ft/lbs while trying to torque up to 122! We were moving along nicely tonight and this happened. After this step, and a few timing belt covers, we would've been putting the upper intake manifold on! Looks like I need to find a few more bolts!

I just wrapped my harness in a sheet, then wrapped electrical tape around that & zip tied it to those rails~

I'll say, 122 ft/lbs ouch. The cam bearing caps are at 12ft/lbs and the lower intake bolts and 4 nuts at 13ft/lbs

Wasn't there a post last night about the plastic cups your fuel injectors sit in having different depths? Couldn't find it when I went back...?

The old seals got stuck in a couple of mine and it was hard to see. That made it appear they were different depths though. Once I got the old seals out, the injectors all seat to the same depth.

Thats EXACTLY what it was. After some prying with a screw driver and a 'doh', I figured it would be best to just delete the post.

And now, after looking at the online manual again, I dont know where we got 122 ft/lbs. When I made the post last night, my little brother was the one that twisted it off and told me the details, I just posted the pics. And after looking at the repair manual, I dont know why he thought 122...Must've just been delirious from working on this thing all day! Well, lesson learned. We were able to just twist it out and I'll run and get another one today.

WTF!?!?!?!

If you notice my original post about the 122 ft/lbs, I had edited it right after I had posted because my brother said it was 113 ft/lbs and then later said 122..

Well I called him today to flip him a healthy dose of crap because I made myself look like a no0b online and he said that, no, it said we needed to torque it up really high! After looking at the ncttora.com online repair manual, I told him no. Well, he pulled up the PDF file that I had downloaded from Toyota at the beginning of all of this and this is what it said...!

HA! WTF?!

And HEY, jerk, (online joking only, not really trying to be rude..) the only other stripping issue/breaking bolts that we've done were the bearing caps on the cams.. We were hand tightening them and they just started free spinning. They NEVER got higher than the 12 ft/lbs that they required.

Im just glad that it was easily removed. Had it broken off down lower, I wouldve been a tad bit more frustrated.
