Yes, calling the dealer is one way. I had a good experience ordering from:
http://www.toyotapartszone.com/
You type your VIN in the "Search Toyota Parts by VIN" field after selecting your vehicle. That should show you only the parts that fit your vehicle in the parts lists.
This site also has great diagrams of the parts.
Good Luck

Im going to start cleaning the mating surface. Haha.
Was thinking about using brake cleaner on the block and the pistons.. Would this be bad for the rings? Any other cleaning products that you guys would recommend?
Ive got the head gaskets, do I need to put any other sealant in there between the heads and block? FIPG? Nothing?
Same thing with the water pump and gasket.. I've got the gasket.. Throw some FIPG with it too?
I had someone tell me that it might not be a bad idea to put a little bit of oil on top of the pistons/around the edge once I start putting everything back together as there hasnt been oil in the block for a while.. Input?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, just things that are going through my mind. Thanks guys!

Hey man I am right at this point of a HG job. This thread has been a blessing. What did you end up using to clean the mating surface? as you so elegantly put it

RedYota, if you check this thread anymore I'd appreciate knowing where you got your replacement vacuum switching valve. I broke mine doing my HG and I need to find a replacement!

Holy moly! Sorry I havent checked in on this thread.. Its just that the 4Runner has been running great since we did the head gasket repair!
As far as the vacuum switching valve (VSV), I just ordered it through my local Toyota dealership. I saved a little by going through their website rather than going in person, but it was just quicker than doing it through Dallas Toyota/Jacque/TRDParts4U.. Even though he saved me an arm and a leg when it came to getting all the other parts.
If there is anything else I can do to help, ask away!

I just wanted to say, what an excellent thread. I started reading it this morning thinking I was gonna spend 2 minutes browsing through, and you guys got me. I've been through all the emotions of your project and I'm glad the truck is running good!
I just joined the forum and I'm doing the EXACT same project in the next couple of weeks. I just bought a '91 4runner for 900$. Its got the 5 speed and a rebuilt engine with 64k miles on it! im super stoked to get it running!
I can upload some pics of the truck, and do my project on this thread or possibly start a new one.. any ideas ? im so excited!

Feel free to do either! Great looking truck, good luck with the build.
This was such a great experience working on this. I learned a lot and have also done two other head gasket repairs (2 other cars) and have now pulled 2 engines out of cars Ive been working on. This engine work taught me so much and helped me get comfortable working this in depth on engines! Again, good luck, take your time and label everything!!

I'd frequent the board more often if I actually owned the 4Runner but its my brothers! It's been running great other than I believe it needs a new knock sensor.. Anyone got a lead on one of those?

Get one of these:
To use on the "upper" bolts:
Get a set of these:
http://www.harborfreight.com/4-pc-12...set-67977.html
to use on the "lower" bolts.
The flex head makes all the difference; if you can get one with the offset handle as shown it's even better.
You need to remove the "lower" bolts from underneath, and you'll need some extensions to do it. You may have to wail on it, so I advise against using 3/8" extensions, and definitely don't throw in one of your expensive "wobble-head" extensions. (Ask me how I know.) The 1/2" HF locking extensions are really useful; you won't end up getting it into place and then accidentally pulling it apart.

I've been wailing with my breaker and long extension but no luck yet. I'll keep on keepin on until those heads are out today. So close but so far away. I'll have to go buy that flex head set today! Thanks scope!

While I've never needed it myself, those on this site who live in the rust belt seem to swear by PB Blaster. Those are only 8mm studs; they may require encouragement, but you don't want to break them off.
