1990 4runner OverDrive Not there

I have a 1990 4runner 4x4 v6 and when it shifts into over drive it the trans free spins as if it was in neutral. I drove it home last night with the over drive off 80 miles no fun at 45 mph.

does anyone know if this is a electric problem or just the trans is bad?

thanks
Nate

Welcome. Sorry I can't tell you what's wrong but you should be able to go faster than 45 with the O/D off.

Well, over drive is just another gear for highways that lowers your rpms. So when you take OD off it just uses one less gear.

You can go faster then 45 but the rpms will just shoot up because its in 4th or 3rd.

you could have tried putting in new shifting solenoids that or its another on of Toyota's infamous blunders, a vacuum leak. but for a new trans. for 150 WOW what a deal hope it works out for you

A340

A340's won't free spin with bad solenoids. They only control the shifting gear selection. If no solenoids work then you would be stuck in OD. The free spin in only one gear sounds like a freaky thing. While your changing trans. maybe add a good trans. cooler.
