1990 22re running issues

Newbie. I have a 1990 4wd truck, 5 spd manual with 22re engine. I was getting a slight hesitation at high RPM's, and the check engine light flashed on. I changed oil, and fuel filter. Now, the truck bucks and backfires and will not run at all. IF I reach in and hold up the outbound fuel line, the motor smooths out. I did have a burned plug wire that I replaced. The air intake hose is tight, no leaks. It has new plugs also. It does burn oil, and has low compression in #1 cylinder.
