1989 4 Runner 22RE running very badly
Ok so my buddy has a 1989 4 Runner 22RE 5-speed manual, and its acting very bad lately.
The check engine light flashes constantly in it.
When you step on the gas it acts like it is missing and only gets up to a certain RPM where if you hold it to the floor it'll stay there and let out some loud backfires ( with flames ). The truck has no power to it at all and after revvin ( neutral revving ) at that spot will rev higher but still be "missing".
Some days it will not do it for a period of about 5-10minutes of driving then it starts doing it again so that rules out the engine itself being out of time.
Opinions and suggestions please! Have tried another fuel sending unit, 3 sets of caps/rotor buttons/plugs and wires, have put on new fuel filter, have drained all fuel and refilled with fresh after cleaning tank, so ????
Thanks for the help in advance.

Ok, so UPDATE! TOYOTA gurus please help!
We have checked timing on the truck it is good. Timed the dist it was perfect.
So far we have replaced/tried:
Coil & Ignitor
Knock Sensor
AFM
TPS
02 Sensor ( had to anyways )
Distributor ( thought, pickup in it? )
Computer ( tried 4 )
What we have figured out, once the truck starts acting up, we can disconnect the battery terminal, or the comptuer. Let it sit for a couple minutes and then it'll work fine for a limited amount of time. We've checked all the fuel injectors with a multimeter and a extension ( listened ) and they sound and are fine. Disconnected cold start injector.
We are at our wits end with this truck...mechanically we think its fine....Were leaning towards electrical now, and some days it'll work perfect others it'll be a pig...doesn't matter about rain/shine/snow etc.
We did find one disconnected wire, black with small red arrows on it by the computer wiring harness ( the wire had rotted off ) but it went towards the back of the truck and not into the computer so we deemed it unessesary.
Should we start looking for bad wires in the harness? Its hard because the truck only acts up now and again...
Anything else we should check ? Thanks
Oh, and edit: Check engine light has a mind of its own, it'll flash constantly, not flash at all, or stay lit. Go figure.
