1989 pickup - starting issues

Ok, so I lucked into an '89 pickup today. It's lifted 4" and a 3" bodylift, has aftermarket steel wheels, 22re and 5 speed. The guy that I gave the truck to me told me that he swamped it last year and after that he put in a new distributor and coil. The truck start and sounds fine. It will run for 3 seconds and then shut off. If you touch the gas, it sputters and dies. I couldn't get it to run, so I trailered it home. I let it sit for 5 hours and didn't touch it. I went out and just for grins tried to start it again. The dang thing fired up like it did before except that this time it kept running! I drove around for 10 mins without any issues. I let it sit for about 30 mins and now it's back to starting, running for 3 seconds and then it dies. I tried unplugging the mass airflow sensor but it did the same thing.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First and foremost, check the CEL codes. Even if the light isnt flashing now, odds are there are some stored codes.
It sounds like a problem with the AFM. You said you disconnected the AFM and tried to start it? Well yeah it won't stay running. The AFM tells the circuit opening relay to turn on and the fuel pump to keep running. Clean the AFM, and the plug on it. Make sure the COR is not fried.

Ok, I will try cleaning the AFM and see if that improves things. I don't see any CELs, but there was no battery in the truck when I went to get it. I would assume that any stored codes are long gone and the truck hasn't run long enough to generate/store any again.

Sounds like fuel pump cutting out. Possible bad wiring and/or clogged filter.

Try putting power directly to the fuelpump connector with 2 leads and see if that makes a difference.

I've also seen the power wires rott off of the top of the sending unit. More than likely its just not getting power though or the filter is clogged.

this may sound stupid but my buddies truck did the same thing and the problem had to do with the fuel pump, fuel filter, or sending unit maybe a possibility

yea i've seen it happen on 3 trucks now...

FIRST thing i would try, would be unplugging the fuel pump connector ( round 2 wire one on top of the sending unit ) and put 2 wires into it, one to ground and the other to 12v+. If it works fine, then you'll have to fix the wiring to it.
