1987 4x4 Pickup Refresher
So I got a pretty sweet deal on this truck less than a month ago. It's not in perfect shape but the body is pretty straight and has only minimal surface rust. It has 187,000 miles and I don't think the timing chain's ever been done (the PO was clueless).
Both plastic timing chain guides are broken. The drivers side guide seems to be completely gone.
and the passenger side guide is not in any better shape.
I bought the truck up in Steamboat Springs and drove it back to Denver in this shape. Glad it held up! The chain rattled sometimes at start up and you could get it to rattle consistently at around 2100 RPM.

We decided it'd be best to remove the engine in order to facilitate the process and get a few other things done while it's out. I'll be doing the headgasket, valve seals, new timing cover, oil pump, fuel filter, water pump, checking the alternator brushes, new clutch and whatever else I can do while the engine is out. If anyone has suggestions on other items I should check out, please post up!
Here's the engine, ready for removal:

I placed an order yesterday with Ted @ Engnbldr. I bought a HD timing chain kit, and the 4 piece engine kit (water pump, oil pump, head gasket and seals, and timing cover) along with the necessary gaskets and hardware. All for ~$175 shipped to my door. I was happy to be able to order most everything that I will need from one source.
This project will take time but i'll try and keep this thread updated as much as I can.
Any tips, advice and suggestions are welcome!

Let's see..
Since I bought it i've gotten it registered and plated, new used tires on it (with great tread), P/S pump (used), exhaust manifold (used), and the timing chain kit, oil pump, timing cover, head gasket kit, water pump and i've still got less than $1500 into it not counting the time i've put in doing the work.

Well sir, You are money ahead in that truck by a long shot. If your taking the head off you could always port the intake and exhaust runners in the head and manifolds for some better flow. I hear that a good header is the way to go with these motors too. Would like to do one myself but the $$ isnt there yet.
