1987 4-runner battery discharging

My sons 4-runner battery is discharging after a day or two. It does this with 3 different batteries, and has a new starter. It is not road ready yet but I used 3 different fully charged batteries. None of the interior or exterior lights stay on when it is turned off. I can disconnect the battery cable and it holds the charge for a week or more. That is as long as I left the cable off. PLEASE HELP......My son wants to put it on the road

Check for a short, the multimeter is your friend. Or pull fuses until it stops, then you'll at least isolate the circuit causing problems. Good luck.

hook up your ammeter between the negative battery terminal and ground, then start pulling fuses to find out where the short is. might be your alternator?

Here is a thread that will help Jim:

Does he have any stereo equipment like a big amp installed? Those things have to be grounded properly or they suck the life out of the battery quick.

Hi this is jim that got the tail gate from you a while back. Right now there is no stereo at all. It's been a long project but it's almost ready for the road.

Check that link I gave you and look at 4crawler's suggestion...that should locate your battery drainer for sure.

I look forward to seeing that thing on the road.

OH hows the crawler doing? Did you get the kids each a 4-runner ? Call me when you get a chance, I'm in your area sometimes and want to see the crawler. Did you tell me there is a rear disc brake conversion for his 4-runner without having to get a kit? JIM 205-541-1126

It's going, just got a few more things to do to it - like an exo cage.

Not yet. I got a few more years for that!
