1986 automactic slipping

i have a '86 4runner 22re auto and when driving normaly (easy on throttle etc.) it acts fine, but if i get on it from stop or when going the engine revs high and it dont gain any speed. i think it is the torque converter slipping but i dont want to get a new one and it not be the problem. so if anyone can help it would be appreciated.
