Hi, new to this site. I recently acquired a basket case '86 4Runner that I am in the process of resurrecting. Over the years it has had engine swaps (apparently) and someone swapped out the engine harness and ECM (with wrong parts). Anyway, missing a lot of hard to find parts to make it run correctly. Plus the harness was in horrible shape. Long story short, I am going to convert it to a carb setup. I have already removed the cobbled up fuel injection equipment and weeded out the mangled up wiring harness - only leaving behind the essentials from the body side of that harness (starter, a/c, oil and temp gauges, backup lights, etc).

My question is this - even though this is a very early fuel injection set up, it did have a knock sensor. During my weeding out of the harness, I un-pinned and removed everything that originally terminated at the ECM. Included in that bundle was a 3-wire pigtail that went all the way over to a green, round 3-wire plug that connected to the igniter on the ignition coil. I tested everything after I got finished with the harness - everything works, including power to the coil when the key is on. What is going to be affected by the absence of that 3-wire connection to the igniter from the ECM? I assume that's knock sensor input. But will the ignition system still function and provide timing advance with that disconnected? If it IS going to be a problem, what are my options?

Are the three wires black, with either a red, yellow, or white stripe?
If so, they're just for EFI.

 

Yes. All three were black, seems like one had a red stripe, one had a yellow stripe and the 3rd one may have been all black - or possibly had a white stripe. I'm at work now, can't confirm.

 

I'm aware - I de-term'd them from the ECM connector. My question is how will this affect my ignition timing advance? Does the ECM control it or does it only retard it when there's a knock sensor input?

 

You need a vacuum advance type distributor from a carb engine.
The EFI distributor will not be satisfactory.

Finally got this thing running today with the carburetor set up. It runs fantastic but as I suspected there is no spark advance. The ignition timing is just constant. I have it set around 17° and it’s fairly drivable but I am going to put an earlier style, vacuum advance distributor in it.
