I came across a 1 ton at the wreckers (with a removable carrier that looks to be the same as whats in my 2nd gen 4 Runner) and I was wondering if they are infact the same? (outside of the gearing)

1 ton toyota? should be a regular old 8", most likely with 4.10 or 4.30 gears.

 

the one tone was usually converted into the mini motorhomes. I tink a lot of the parts from the 1 ton were the same as a simluar 4x4 of the same year. We had a motor home in the shop once and we were able to use a lot of the prts from a 4x4 but not the 2wd. I don't know about the diff. We were doing brakes & suspension parts

 

not sure but i imagine the carrier is the sme as the v6. probably the 1 ton is just a full floater v6 8 inch. swap the whole axle or nothing at all.

BTW some of the 1 tons became box trucks, moving vans.

 

depends on the truck also -- full floaters only came under dually cab & chassis trucks, like motorhomes and flatbeds. regular bed single wheel trucks got a 5 lug 8" semi float rear end, 56" wide(1" wider than the '79-85 4x4s)

Post back what you find. I'm looking at a set of one ton axles that I can get cheep but dont really know any thing about them

 

Sorry to hijack here but since we're on the subject what does the term "1 ton" or "half ton" actually refer to? What is thw whole f150, f250, 1500, 2500, etc. all about?

I have more of a background in cars so some of this truck terminology confuses me. Someone once told me that my truck was built on a 1 ton frame. Did he mean that the frame weighs 1 ton or what?

Are you talking about a 1 ton 2WD or 4WD ?
The 1 ton 2WD had an 8" rear like the 4WD, but the axle shafts are a different spline count (as well as being 5 lug instead of 6 lug). 2WD gearing is also higher (like 3.90 or so).

 

nope, they had the same spline count as a 4x4, 30 spline. for the most part, 2wds after '78 had a 27 spline 7.5" rear end, but 1 tons and for some reason 4 speeds got an 8" 30 spline diff like a 4x4. most 4 speeds had 3.08 gears(before '79 they had all had 4.11 though), 1 tons got 4.10 or 4.30 gears depending on what you wanted at the dealer.

the 2wd axles are 56" instead of 55" like the '79-85 4x4 though, so you can't interchange the axle shafts.
