Wiring for the backup lights and the 4wd Light
Hi everyone, new guy here
just picked up a 84 4wd pickup with a 20r engine in it. Yes i know it should have a 22r
My question is, I have the sending units for the backup light coming out of the trans and the switch coing out of the transfer case but no wires! I guess I'm missing a harness and I don't know where it is suppose to go.
Any help out ther, pics?

No wires and no connectors, either?
PIcs would help.
I would start by tracing existing wires from the backup lights to see where's the closest point they get to the backup switch.

Also, I checked the light harness in the rear for tail, brake light ect. and seems there in no other connection for a backup light to harness to plug into
Someone told me that the harness (missing) goes to the front engine compartment, again I see no place to plug any harness into

On my '85 4Runner, a 'Y' shaped harness plugs into the backup light sensor and 4wd light sensor, and runs up to the main harness in the engine bay. The connection location is inside the curve of the intake manifold and plenum. Same harness junction where a large group of engine sensors connect to. I can take a photo tomorrow if you need it.

I'm doing a "complete restore of my truck, I guess when I start taking it apart I might find something.
This truck has been teenagered! A guy had it a gave it to his teenage son who then totally ruined it.
It's a good base though, going to have some fun doing it

OK, on my 86 MoreFunner.... backup and 4WD switches join into a Y in harness roughly above where clutch fork (?) enters the tranny. That harness runs to point between the starter and the intake manifold and there are 2 connectors again there. Like GPS says, that harness runs up beneath the Intake manifold close to the engine.
It eventually runs along the right hand inner fender, thru a grommet in the firewall just outboard of the wiper motor.
Between the intake manifold and the engine is an inhospitable place for wires; hot and difficult to run/work on. The only valid reason backup and 4WD wires were ran there is for efficiency in manufacturing and routing the harness during assembly. If I were to rewire, I would take it from above starter, run it along the thick positive battery-starter cable to rejoin harness along inner fender.

Thanks, that the info I needed. This truck has been "mickey moused" guess when they pulled out the 22r (don't know the history) they must have removed the harness and never put it back on. The plugs (see pics) all are corroded so in my rebuild I will look for new ones. I'm going to wait till i change out my carb and intake manifold to look for the wire connection. But now at least I know what i'm looking for.

Is the "Y" harness the same for 84-88 pickups? Sounds like it's something prone to having issues after 30+ years of heat cycles and such.
I dug this sub harness up in my lil collection, is this the one OP is missing? I labeled it G52 and it would have came from a 86 4x4 pickup.

I see, I'll try to find a source for those white connectors and see about reproducing this sub harness. Seems they are fairly hard to find, couldn't find any on ebay with just simple term search like toyota pickup harness.
EDIT: I've spent an hour or so digging around with no luck. I contacted my connector housing supplier to see if he can dig anything up in an old catalog. He's been in this stuff way longer than me so hopefully he has some luck.

I was thinking of reasonably-priced parts sources I know of, and Toyota Foolish on eBay popped into my head. Their yard's located in NC, but they process and ship orders quickly.
Send them a quick message about what you need, with the year of your truck and transmission model, I bet they have what you need.

Just another question, "if" that is the harness that attaches to the backup light switch and the 4wd sender, does that harness then go to engine bay, under intake manifold and then plugs into another plug? and then where does it go from there.

That harness piece shown above is truly identical to the one in my 85, which shares many parts with your truck, despite being an EFI 4runner. I'm pretty sure we both have the w56-a transmission.

And yes, it's truly freezing here as if it were the Antarctic tundra. My outdoor thermometer read 5 or 10° all day and it's been that way for a couple weeks now. I'm actually looking forward to next week where the daytime temps are supposed to soar way up to the low 30's.

It's been crazy warm here, in the 50s, very uncommon for here
Mine has a g52 trans
It goes where? ecu? is that the emissions box?

Hmm, that changes things around then. I'm not familiar with the g52 or it's harness, might be different. Do you still have the Aisin carb and emissions stuff hooked up? If not, then your ecu might not be doing much or could even have been removed. Ecu = engine control unit. It's as you thought, mainly for emissions stuff. An early computer. It's located behind the passenger kick panel under the glovebox.
