Which way to go...?

Alright so i just bought a new truck with a rod knock'n 22r. Pulled the oil pan today and found the #4 rod has lots of slack which i expected. I also found a heap of parts sitting in the oil pan.. obviously a broken timing chain guide, it has some pretty major grooves worn into it too. So can just replace the guide? Or should i do chain and gears too? What would you guys reccomend? Thanks!
Edit: Oh yeah theres a little spring about 1.5" long and 3/8" in diameter is that part of the timing chain guide?

How many miles and sounds like a rebuild? I wouldn't just change guides, I'd do the whole timing chain system. As far as the spring...is it springy or really compact and thick?

The problem is, i'm tight on time and money i work and go to school but i may just have to deal with a little extra down time.
Heres a pic of the spring

Now heres the other thing.. i have an extra 22r that was given to me non running, i donno whats wrong with it but if the bottom end is good i may use it with the new truck's top end on it cause the new one runs PERFECTLY. What do you guys think about that?

Are you doing calculas?

Anyways. Yeah, that would definately work. Just long as the other bottom end is good. I know I've seen that spring. grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Still, sounds like the same amount of work. Still have to pull the motor, still have to put a head gasket(well, all seals really) on and the new timing chain stuff. Plus, who knows if the water pump or oil pump is worth a poop...but hey, details baby, details!!!!!

Yup, when I spun the bearing on the #1 rod I made sure it was done right and found a machine shop that rebuilds 22r motors. They did a great job and it was well worth the wait. It was also cheaper, 'cause I did all the heavy work myself. Of course it was my DD and I had to rent, but that just what I had to do.

You can check out my pics (https://www.yotatech.com/gallery/sho...ser=20182&sl=b) and see how purty it was when it came back.

Like I said, it's all the same work, unless the other one craps out then it's twice the work!!!

Atleast have the old bottom end looked over.

Remember:

"THE BITTERNESS OF HASTINESS
REMAINS LONG AFTER THE
SWEETNESS OF MAKING IT WORK IS FORGOTTEN"

I think I totally made that up...

What about engnbldr? Cant you get a T chain kit, and rods for a bit over $100? Everything for under $200? Trust me I understand budget brother. DO it yourself? What do you think someone will charge to look over a bottom end?

NIce avatar by the way. Made me pull out some old cds.

Hah thanks thats my favorite album of theirs.. they're one of my favorites of all time. I donno how much for a bottom end lookover.. i'm doing the rod bearings and probly a crankshaft seal too. NAPA wants a little over 200 for the head set, and the timing set. with that i get all the gaskets needed for the head installation, and the timing chain, gears, guides and some other thing i donno what it is lol. but i donno napa is cheap ill look into engnbldr
