Truck shimmy shake

About 55 mph the steering wheel shakes hard.....not until then and about 60mph it goes away.... IDEAS? I was thinking a wheel out of balance, but not a mechanic.

Thanks
Woody

Check your tire for a bubble. Otherwise a balance may help

Need to find someone with roadforce type tire balancer. Its possible the tire is out of round or the wheel is bent as well. Also how is the frontend, nice and tight?

This happened on my 1993 Camry for its entire life - shook from 65 mph to 70 mph, nowhere else. My family has been going to the same Toyota mechanic for 30+ years (parents went before I was even born) and he was never able to figure out why it did this.

I have noticed that my 1994 Pickup does this as well, but not all the time. It is usually around 65 mph as well.

I think I remember watching a 'Trucks' or '4x4' episode on the power block relating to the Jeeps 'Death Wobble'.

It had to do with a lift kit changing front suspension geometry.

Just a thought. I had a friend with a Gen 2 4runner that did that simply because he put big tires on it and kept the factory suspension.

Prob not your problem but its an idea of something to look at. I'm sure the more experienced rock crawlers would know for sure how you could tell if the geometry was way off.

SA Toyotas are also prone to Death Wobble. Root cause to be anything from a bad steering box, worn Tie Rod Ends, Spring bushings, wheel bearings, trunnion bearings, wheel out of whack, out of balance tires..and I am sure I missed a couple of things...

the tire that they added the weight on... rotate it for one of the tires in the back, if the wobble goes away, it's a tire/wheel issue.

Just noticed, Should prolly move this to 86-95 since it's a 87. Checked shackle bolts no difference, moved tire no difference. did notice bolt on front steering arm loose, but tightened and no difference, might be giving in soon and taking to mechanic! Anyone know any in rochester mn?

you haven't done the simple tire rotation test yet, have you?

the problem should either follow the tire being rotated, or it won't... process of elimination.
