Truck just died!!
My son has a 1985 4Runner with the 22RE he was on his way to school this morning and the truck just died. He started it back up it shut off again and now wont start. It's been running fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated truck is sitting on the side of the road. This just happened . Thanks

Sounds like it is on the fuel side the other would be on the firing/spark side. I would suggest pulling the fuel filter and see if you can get air thru it. They get plugged up really well.
If you can get air thru the filter, start looking at the fuel pump. This being your sons truck, does he run it on empty all of the time? Fuel keeps the pump cool and if he has been running on empty, it could be a fuel pump just overheated and worn out.. I would do several checks before replacing the fuel pump. Toyota wants about $300 for a fuel pump. Parts stores want about $150. I have gotten great replacements off of ebay for $30 shipped.

LOL...I would bet it is the pump. Let him know to atleast stay above an 1/8th tank. I fill up at 1/4 tank.
It has been a while since I trouble shot a fuel pump. Seems like I proped the AFM flap open and then disconnected the fuel line off of the back of the fuel rail and ran it to a jar and turned the key on.
When a truck is running, it will fill a quart jar in about a minute or so for a rough guess, you will know if it pumping enough fuel.
On my 88 thread below, on the first page, I have a link to ebay fuel pump. It is about $5 doallars cheaper if you call them as they dont have to pay their sales percentage.
I have had great luck with those fuel pumps. One guy did say his wasnt an exact fit, but of the 6 I have used on 6 different trucks, they look and fit just like a factory one and you wouldnt be able to tell the diffence.

If you plan on getting a fuel pump then I suggest you get it directly from DENSO or SparkPlugs.com. Cheaper then dealer. More auto part stores are starting to carry denso now though.

Slow down there and do a little more troubleshooting before throwing parts at it. There is a way to turn the fuel pump on by jumping a couple of terminals in the diagnosios box, however your's is an 85 and the procedure is slightly different. Search for it on 4crawler's site and you will find the procedure. This will tell you if your pump is good or not.
Next check for spark...autoparts stors sell spark testers for cheap.
Next check to make sure the AFM flap is operational and not stuck. The AFM actually gives the signal to the ECM to turn of the fuel pump. Search for the test to make sure the AFM is good.
Then you buy and replace what is broken...

Ok so he got the fuel pump on and got it started. It revs up fine in neutral but when he goes to drive he can't get ovet 2000 RPM with out it breaking up. it's hesitating badly under load. Any thoughts?

Did he get it home? Maybe check the TPS. Another thing that's relatively inexpensive and could help is replacing the ignition system; plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Mine never died, but it did all of a sudden start missing and acting very sluggish and new ignition components had it running like new. Testing the AFM would be a good idea too.

This should get you going in the right direction.
