Transmission Problem

So, as everyone may or may not know, I bought a new 4Runner, its in my sig line. The problem that I am having is kinda odd. The transmission would "pop" out of first mainly, and would feel like it went into second, but when you let off the clutch, it would make a high speed faint grinding noise, as if you "missed" the gear. Well, I just got done test driving it after replacing the shifter seat bushing. It doesnt feel as floppy, but does leave something to desire. The old bushing was just the lower half, the black flat rubber washer looking piece. My problem is, it still pops out of first, but doesnt if you come off the clutch quickly, only when you clutch it like "normal". I'm hoping the tranny isnt shot. Now, second gear, that issue is not fixed either, but occurs less often that before, and not as bad. Im wondering what else it could be, its also pouring outside, but I'm going out to Wal-mart for some gear oil, going to drain and refill the transmission, see if that helps. If anyone has experienced this issue, be honest, if i need a new transmission, tell me. Well, thanks in advance, hopefully someone has an idea.

It sounds like your transmission is shot, you can try changing the gear oil and see if that helps, but with the problems your having i don`t think it will.

Yeah, thats what I figured. great. I'm going to wait for a few more responses.

Another question, How bad is it to rebuild one of these transmissions, or, anyone have one near 93555 zip code, like a 150 mile radius? For an irresistable price? Hope someone knows something, or has rebuilt one of these trans. before.

Finally got to the trans and t-case oil change, all I have to say is , wow. I got about 2 quarts from the trans, and about half a quart from the t-case. Beautiful, huh. Well she is re-filled now, the t-case goes smooth into 4HI and 4LO, and easily back into 2HI. The trans on the other hand, definately dying. Sooooo, now i'm trans hunting for sure, let me know if anyone has a good deal on a new/rebuilt/used one.

Well, the shakedown run didnt go so well. I believe the diffs are gear differently. But, i tried to do the rotate tire method, but cant get it to work, also, Its making a clacking noise as you rotate the front tires up on jack stands. When in 4LO and you let off the clutch the truck wants to stop itself quickly. also does it when you let off the gas, it will just stop. Im at a loss, this great deal is starting to turn into a money pit, faster than the normal truck. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Well, looking around for a new trans, got ahold of one company, says that the used trans is at 66,000 miles, and verified. I want pictures of the truck it came out of, you just dont part out an old toyota with only that amount of miles.

Well, got a known good trans from a local fab shop, took two days to get it out and back in. Well, second through 5th and reverse are beautiful, but the same issue with first. Tried my old shifter, the shifter that was on the trans and the shifter off of the shop owners rock buggy, nothing. Tomorrow he is calling Marlin to see if there is some wierd little issue causing this, or why it is happening. If anyone else has an idea, feel free to chime in, im willing to try anything at this point.

By the way, when you talk to John let him know I don't need the Marlin seals from him anymore. I still vote something in the clutch, simply by process of elimination.

For the front diff, sounds like its had it. Drain it and refill with fresh gear oil. Strain the old stuff and see if it has metal in it. Best method I have found is get a 99 cent strainer and put that above the catch pan. Make sure you take the fill plug off before the drain plug just in case it wont come off.

The tranny... hmmm.. Might be the shifter bushing? Not much experience there.

Front diff had the wrong gears in it, we already fixed that issue by swaping for the properly geared third. Now its just transmission issue.
