Torque spec 85' 22r

Hey guys, Im new here and need some help with my 85' 22r.
I just recently did a valve adjustment and when I put the valve cover on and used 10ft lbs to tighten down the valve cover screws. 4 days later the grommets are all cracked and I get a really strong smell of gas. So what im getting at is the 10ft lbs of torque correct? Or are these new grommets just crap.

I only snug mine just enough to seat the gasket then about a 1/4turn more. I think it's only just several inch-lbs according to FSM. I don't know for certain.

If you tighten to much, yes you can crack the grommets, but you can also put the valve cover in contact with the rocker assembly causing damage and/or noise(ticking & clattering).

Thanks for the info. I couldnt find the torque specs in the FSM. So i'll see what happens with the 1/4 turn after its seated. Thanks!

You want to try and find Factory specs, but my objective is to just secure the valve cover gasket to the head. There shouldn't be any pressure inside, so you're only supposed to be stopping flowing oil from leaking, not pressurized oil. Make sense?
