Temp gauge and oil pressure gauge problems
Ok i got a 1985 pickup 4by sr5. has a 89 head and who knows what year block or what its outta as i got 2 and he only told me that one was outta a 89 runner and never said which one and they were slightly different in things like oil pressure holes. so the oil pressure sensor from my original block will not thread into the space next to the filter.. the only thing that will thread in is the oil low sensor which was on this block.. under the motor mount there is another hole but it has a plug in it.. is this maybe where the pressure sensor fits in and you plug the low oil sensor hole? or is there somethin messed up like maybe a change in threads over years?.
now the temp sensor never worked right with this block. when you start the truck it goes up about half way. sits there until you rev the motor up then it will just drop to nothing and never change until you shut the truck off and start it again and it does the same thing.. any ideas for either of these? driving these older trucks without temperature and oil pressure gauges makes me nervous so would like to get it fixed..

Hi on my 85 22re I just took out the oil sw and screwed in the pressure sensor in the sam hole. Don't know if this will help you.
I think the temp sw runs on neg side so the wire may be chaffing on a ground. I don't have a clear idea right know though.

temp gauge reading........remove and ground the wire from the temp sensor in the engine compartment. if the temp gauge pegs the needle the problem is with the sending unit. if it doesn't not then the problem is most likely with the gauge itself.

the oil pressure sender, whether idiot light or gauge, thread into the same hole.
later blocks may have a knock sensor, and I wonder if that's part of your problem....
the dashboard's coolant temp sender mounts on the intake manifold between #2 and #3 cylinders on EFI (and I believe the same place on carb'd, but I'd have to check the FSM to verify).

The knock sensor hole is not a hollow hole but the oil pressure sender hole is and is directly below the oil filter, as far as the coolant temp sensor on the carb'd setup it is between the #2 and #3. Hope this helps.

does the knock sensor also read oil pressure.. out of the 3 blocks i had.. my 85 block had what is said to be a knock sensor.. larger and covered by a rubber gourmet thing.. 1 of the newer blocks had this and one had the idiot light.. i believe the block in the truck now has the idiot light style.. agh i hate not knowing what year parts come from..

Ive got a similar problem with my '85 4runner's temp guage.
My temp guage will read correctly one minute (just below half), and drop to dead cold the next. I just had to replace the head because the last one cracked. I don't want to go through that again.
It happens sporadically and I haven't figured out how to make it happen or make it go away, it just seems to fix itself..
I'd really like to get this figured out, this is my second head this year and I don't want to buy a third or change it out again.

i have a feeling it is the gauge itself.. i am going to take the dash apart and test the gauge and see what happens right soon. since it sometimes works right now i am more worried about the oil pressure gauge..

I think mine is the guage since i just replaced the sensor with the head. How hard is it to take the dash apart?
btw, is there nothing in the FSM to test and troubleshoot the temp guage and sensors?
