swapping a 89 22r into a 85 pu 22r ??

i have a 85 pick up and im wanting to swap a 22r from a 89 pick up. everything looks to be the same and simple to do but i found that the carb has some diffrences. the carb on the 89 22r has like an extra plug from a sensor that the coolant runs through i think it might be for cold idle start or somthing like that. the 85 22r carb has like an older sensor where coolant runs through but only has vacuum run from it. would i be able to swap the older sensors from the 85 carb to the 89 carb. ohh yea and the reason why i dont just use the 85 carb is because it need to be rebuilt. any help is welcomed!!

As far as I knew you couldn't get a carbed engine in an 89

Are you sure it's the original engine? Or maybe the truck isn't an 89?

Carbs were options in the 2wd base model trucks through 1990, believe it or not.

To answer the question though, yes you can swap an 89 long block into an 85. The long blocks (ie valve cover to oil pan) is the exact same. You will have to swap most of the sensors, intake, carb, exhaust, wiring, etc. Its all unbolt and bolt on stuff. Very simple, but DO NOT try and just drop the whole engine complete with carb etc from the 89 into the 85. It will not just plug in.

Also, make sure you verify the oil pans are the same. In 89, only 2wd trucks came with the carbed 22R, and if you have an 85 4x4, you will have to swap the pans.
