ok, so i was working on changing my passenger side front leaf pack cause there was a broken leaf in it.
i managed to damage the threads on the bolt for the front spring eye. now what do i do?
its not just a standard bolt, it has that stupid flange thing.

i cant figure out what thread it is, but if someone knows i might beable to repair it with a die.
or im thinking i might be able to weld a plate with a 1/2" hole in it over the large hole for the flange and just use a standard bolt.
either way im open to sugestions

Forget the size of the threads, but is the same as the shackle pin nut, it is M14x1.25 (approx 9/16" dia.).

 

think i could drill out the bolt from the flange and use a 1/2" bolt?
i dont have a drill bit bigger than 1/2" haha and my drill is only a 3/8 chuck so i dont think ill find a bigger bit with that size chuck.
and ya, m14x1.25 seems to be the right one, but i dont have a die for that size

 

For that size bolt, you'll need a sleeve to fill in the 18mm ID spring eye bushing.

 

there is a sleave in teh bushing, its ment for a 14mm bolt, a half inch bolt is 12.5mm as far as i know. im thinking thats what ill do for a temperary fix till i can find a 14mm bolt thats long enough.

 

Oh yeah, forgot the sleeve in the '84/5 spring bushing, '83 and older have none. Suppose 1/2" would work for a temp. fix, probably would not want to drive it fast or take it off-road like that. You can use a 9/16" bolt in place of the 14mm, they fit just fine and are 100x easier to find.

 

ya ill find a 9/16 tomorow, and i cant get my little hand held drill to drill out the bolt anyway, so ill find someone with a drill press and good bits to drill it out tomorow so its all good.

 

what about getting the right bolt from Toyota?

 

9/16" and call it done. The difference between 14mm and 9/16" is only .0113". Or hit up a scrap yard.

 

look up spring pin on google. it will come up with a site that has that for the fj. didn't dig through the site to see if they carried any other ones. the fj one was 20.00 each.

i feel you, i am looking for the center spring pin, as i am taking one of the leaves from my pack.

 

i dont really have the time to wait for an orderd bolt, or the money right now.
what i ended up doing was cutting off the old bolt, and drilling out the flange thing at welding school where i did my C level course.
put a 9/16 x 4 1/2" grade 8 bolt in it and it seems to work perfectly.
i figure id call that fixed right.
torqued everything down and drove it to work. seems to ride a little better without a broken leaf in the pack, not to mention safer lol

Best fix, when you have the time, is to cut off the stock spring hangers (if they don't tear off on their own) and make yourself a new hanger set up for regular bolts:

ya, when i have time and money to lift it, thats what i will do. hopefully i wont have to touch either spring hanger again untill then.
