Starting problem

So I have a 1985 pickup with a 22r and the problem is the motor will run good but will only crank if you hold a rag over the top of the carb. Won't crank own it's own unless you do that. I don't know alot so any help would be appreciated

sounds like acc pump is bad or the passage is plugged. look down the top of the carb with the engine off and work the throttle, there should be a squirt of gas when throttle is opened . if the choke is working it should start cold but not after the choke opens. that is if the acc pump is bad.

Its squirting gas but it like it will only crank with the rag over top of it. If I put the breather and everything back on it won't crank up

is it a cold start problem? if it is check the choke to see if it is working right. is the stream of gas Strong or is it a short shot or intermittent when the throttle is moved ?

I don't think its squirting as much as it should but its gettin somethin. It also does not want to idle without pressing the throttle when its running.

if it is not a strong stream it still could have a restriction . you can remove the acc pump and hold the diaphragm up to light and look for a pin hole. it is on the passenger side of the carb ,it will have a leaver on the cover to operate the pump .it has four screws holding it on. if it looks good shoot carb cleaner through the passage to make sure it is open.
