Runner dies at random

So last week I was driving my 84 4runner and I didn't even get 2 miles from my house and it died right in the middle of the street. So I get out push it over and it just cranks and is popping white smoke through the carb then after a few minutes it fires right up and seems to be running fine. I get a little further down the road and it does it again dies I crank for a few and it fires right up. After the second time I turn around and head back home where it proceeds to do this at least 2-3 more times. It did something like this a few months ago I was driving along it was running great and then it just died and was popping through the carb took for ever to start and when it finally did I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. When I got it home the first time I pulled the air cleaner off and checked all the vacuum lines and I think one was off or I had accidentally pulled it off taking the air cleaner off. But after I checked everything the first time and put it back together it ran fine. But now it is acting up again and I am not sure what it causing this. When it is running like I said it runs great well for a 22R.

Thanks

I was thinking that and am thinking maybe too much because when it pops back through the air cleaner you can smell gas. Any ideas what it could be? Is it time to junk the stock carb? And go for a Weber?

Your carb and lines might need to be cleaned. Also your fuel pump might be going out also. Just a suggestion, but im only 10% sure on that one. I suggest cleaning everything out and trying that again. Cause what it sounds like is that its not getting enough air to the system. So it could be a clog some where or just dirty. Or from the other aspect it could be getting to much fuel for the air mixture and so its actually flooding it while your driving. Try readjusting the carbs and see if that fixes it also. Just throwing out some suggestions before you start buying things lol.

Good Luck,
Mark

I plan on taking a look at it this weekend gonna get a can of carb cleaner and give it a good cleaning. Parts of the carb are gunked up so it could use it either way. No wasn't going to buy a Weber just yet I barley drive it was going to start with the fuel filter then move on.
